Flat base bullets vs. boat tails

I've shot boat tails almost exclusively from my bolt guns for years. But lately I've been toying with an AR-15 in .223 and it seems to me I'm getting better groups from flat base bullets than I do boat tails. Does the faster 1-8 twist make a difference ? I'm shooting a moderate load of H322 over a flat base 60 gr Hornady v-max and that loads out shooting every boat tail I've tried. Not that I'm complaining just curious ?

When you have at least 45 minutes give Randy Robinett who makes bibbs bullets a call,he'll give you the straight scoop on the difference, keep a note pad near by. and he knows .

I've found the same to be true in several of my match ARs - FB bullets being easier to get really tight groups out of than just about any BT design. That being said, you can usually get the BTs to shoot as well with some load tuning. The FBs are simply not as fussy. That's the main reason I shoot 70gr.FBHPs in my 6BR tubegun at 200, and am planning to shoot Berger 85 FBHPs at 200 with a RTS in 6.5x47L.

I dont knw all the ins and outs about FB vs BT bullets, but I am one of the only ones I hear of in my area who uses flat base bullets out to long ranges, 1000yds sometimes.
I think it is like Flatlander says, they seem more forgiving. I dont get as much opportunity to tune loads like some shooters do, so I have had a good run with flat base bullets. I have not used them in the last few months, but then my scores have dropped as well, with more verticle than I was getting. I use custom made flat bases with an ogive similar to Sierra MKs.
