Fixed 48 for short range br

The thing to remember is that no matter what power optic.....the mirage is still there......and your target is not where it appears to be. The best of the best learn how to use the extra power to their advantage. It is a learned skill by lots of practice sessions in mirage brought on by all kinds of conditions.....not just + 90* and cloudless. Light (as opposed to heavy) mirage may be the worst to cope with because it is very subtle and most on the line cannot detect it to allow for it.

Throw in the occasional 300 yard score match and ........ am I into variable power scopes to pull 100,200 and 300 duty ?

I've been shooting 12x42 NF, 15x55 NF & 10x60 March in UBR score matches for 7 seasons. I can count on one hand with fingers left over the times I've turned my power down for mirage. It doesn't help, just makes the image smaller and more difficult to see. I shot at River Bend Gun Club in Dawsonville GA today in heavy mirage for most of the 200 yard match. Never even considered turning it down. Things turned out pretty good. And to sort of answer the OP's question, if anything the 48X is not quite enough although I've done fairly well with it. Shot a 513 in mirage and wind a while back @ Two Brothers Rifle Range.

Jim Borden suggested to me for 100-200 in Pa where we both live to go with the fixed 50 March & i am very glad i did.....But it also got me really liking March scopes. Now having 3 ( all different ) my wallet is a bit thinner but i haven't regretted buying one......;)

I shoot longrange and groundhog shoots here in pa. I own mostly NF 12-42 br's a couple of 10-50 sightrons and 2 golden eagles. A fixed 36 IOR which I love. I can count on one hand with 3 fingers left over the number of times I have turned the variables down in 15 years.
Just my .02.

Most all short range BR, 100-300, is shot with fixed power scopes between 36 to 50 power. Like it was stated earlier, the mirage is going to be there no mater what power that you are using. The 48 should work great for these distances.
One of the other reasons that you don't see many variable power scopes in short range is weight. If you are shooting group the LV class is 10.5 pounds and most rifles will not make that weight with a variable.

When I first started shooting short range BR, the 24 power scope was in full swing. At the time there were still many shooters who felt 24X was too much of a good thing and swore that anything higher than the 15-18 power region would make mirage too difficult to deal with.

I’d shoot a 100 power if I could.
