All jokes aside my experiance has demonstrated that many things change the sound of steel. A large gong hit with 165 grain 30-06 at 2900 FPS dinged at 200 yards. The same gong, same distance with a 265 grain 444 Marlin at 2100 FPS (BTW the Marlin and Springfield have very similar case capacity) the tone of the gong DONGED!

What steel is used and I don't mean Cabelas, I mean AR550, AT350.My scenario involves the exact same rounds from the exact same rifle at the exact same distance all producing different sounds ( wrt loudness) as it hits different steel plates. The Cabelas 1/2" thick 7" round gong was much quieter.
