First time on the 600yd range....addictive!

Went out the other day and was able to get signed off on the 200/300/600 ranges. This is my first time shooting out past 100 yds and boy is it fun! Here is my 600 yd target. I ran out of the reloads I was testing so this was with factory Hornady 168gr AMAX Superformance.

Not bad, I am only counting 3 outside of the 10 ring.

Proper reloads and lots of trigger time, you will keep all of them in the X ring.

Good Luck

Is that the MR-1 target? What rifle were you shooting?

Yeah, it's the MR-1. I'm shooting a Savage F/TR in .308. I bought it a few months ago and have just recently had time to get it out for some range time.

I often meet guys at the range where I do load development. It only has a 300 yard range and they ask about shooting 1000 yards at Camp Pendleton. My advice is always to come shoot our Mid Range matches and get a feel for the whole process before attempting 1000. There is nothing easy about 600 yards, especially in the wind. My strategy has paid off several times. Now, we have them hooked. :)

Glad you had a great time! I also have Savage 308 FTR.

What are your loads?

I've been using Hornady 178gr AMAX, Hornady Match brass, CCI BR2, seating 15 thou off, and have worked up to 43.5gr RE15 with no pressure signs. So far I've not been happy with them out at 200 yds. I don't have a chrony yet so I'm not sure what MV I'm getting out of that load and not sure if my 12" twist barrel is stabilizing those 178s enough.

I just recently ran out of the amax and now I'm working up some 168 SMKs. I know others have had a lot of success with the 168s and I would also like to play with some 155s.

I'm still new to all of this so I'm just having fun and trying to learn everything I can.

What loads have you found to work well out of your Savage?

I've been spending a lot of time on our 200/300 for load development and for my own development. We went out to the 600 yd range just to get signed off with the range officer that we knew enough not to launch a bullet into the next county, but I knew I probably wouldn't be back to the 600 for a while. I know I've got a lot of improvement to do.

I guess it's kinda like golf. Everyone want to brag about how far they can hit their driver, but can't sink the ball when they get on the green. If you can't shoot well at 200/300 then you're just going to frustrate yourself when you push it back to 600/1000 and the wind is going to kick your butt.

First time at 600, using factory ammo, and every shot is in the black. You did Great!
Keep on doing it! With good handloaded ammo and a little practice you'll be tearing the center out of that target.

Yep, hitting the X-ring out near where you can't see it anymore (with your un-aided eyeballs, that is!) is some kinda fun!

Wait 'till you try 1,000 yards! You won't want to go home again... unless you need more ammunition!

You should shoot one of our 1,000 yard matches at AEDC in Tullahoma (but don't bring the 168 SMKs).

168 and 175 SMK do pretty darn good at 300. I have not had the chance to shoot it much further. Did ring some steel at 400. Hornady 178 HPBTM is showing some promise. I have some half moa groups at 300 with them in handloads.

Been slamed at work but cant wait to stretch it out further.

My range only goes out to 600, but that should keep me busy for a while. I would definitely like to travel to a 1000 yd range one day.

Anyone shooting 308 out to 1000? If so what loads do you like? Just curious.

I've shot 175 SMK's at 1000 that were good. I've built a load with a 185 Berger LRBT & H-4895 that's ready to go as soon as I can get back out to 1000 yard at Blakely, Ga.

Got to be the MSSA club. Home of over 60 National Records set in Prone and Fclass Midrange.
Heard they are getting a new blacktop road back to the Highpower range to boot.
Welcome to the sport. If you have any questions shoot me a PM about 308.

Yes...it was at MSSA. I joined out there last summer just to start shooting high power rifle. I think they've started paving up to the new club house, but I don't think they've made it to the high power range yet.

Hope to see some of you out there.
