How cool is that!!Got a request from a customer to see if I could machine his barrel to an Octagon shape. Came out pretty good for the first attempt.
David,Very nice. Kind of interesting in the history. In the very past blanks would have started out this way and then turned round I would assume. Now a round is being milled back into square sides. I wonder how this has affected any stress's in the barrel and how it will shoot, look forward to hearing follow ups. Would this profile be heavier than a round? ie taking the edges off must make it lighter but probably a lot less stiff.

Ok, you have stirred the pot of what if's! I've a Ruger #1 action that I've wanted to barrel in a 6BR with a Octagonal barrel for a long time. I have 6mm SS Heavy Varmint barrel blanks and a selection of 6BR Finish reamers. Is this something of a project you would be able to do. If so, PM me when convenient to talk about this!
All the best.
