Well anyone that hasn't read my other post should know. This first outing with the new 222 Old School BR rifle had to work in the worst conditions I've shot in in over 10 years. Plus we just got it chambered 2 weeks before the match. Then the night before I had to fix a barrel shelf in the bedding I overlooked that was over 1/8" to tall, putting a lot of pressure on it when tightened down. Brain fart 1, I just never checked it? But load development must have yielded a close one?
Conditions: 15 to 20 mph winds from the SW Temps with gusts @ around 30 mph and raising to 40 plus by the second relay the rain started? 1 drew bench #3, benches 1 thru 5 are open with just a roof over you. So with 40+ mph gusts from the SW, shooting to the North I not only had trouble keeping my hat on keeping the rain out of my scope was a pain. Plus shooting soak and wet, with nothing but a long sleeve T shirt, yes @ 65 degrees @ 7am didn't look to see falling Temps from there? Yes, 54 degrees @ 12pm match time.
Match was 2 targets @ 100 yards + 2 @ 200 yards. To my surprise, my zero was close, 2 shots in the bull after a couple clicks up left and my first record bulls was a 10. Second a wtf 8, watching the flags and shooting with tails straight out whipping when the holders quit shaking was what was available, so I blew it off as ME. BIG MISTAKE, 3rd bull, a nine, same right low.
Back to the sighter and a couple more up and a few right like I did on my initial adj. And back in the bull. Next 2 records were 10 1x. Second target 2-9s 4-10s. Well by now I'm soaked cold and blew the match.
But that light at the end of the tunnel was about to happen. Those missed bulls were early on the targets, so after cleaning one fowler I figured wasn't getting it? I shot 200 by giving 4 or 5 shots on the sighter, suddenly no more missed 10's. I also gave more attention to the letoffs in the gusts, not waiting when I seen the slow down instantly letting the shot go. Results I won 200 with a 20-2x, all in all, good enough to finish the day with the first outing being so screwed up.
Hard to make a conclusion with the bedding screw up, the conditions, the bench draw, and not being dressed for the conditions. Shooting the only 22 out of 18 shooters, against 2 30 BR's and 15 6ppc shooters, the old 222 had to have a few asking how that 222 did that at 200 yards? Bad thing is, they also had to be wondering how anyone could do that 200 with a 222, and screw up so badly at 100?
All in all, I hope to make a better showing in 2 weeks. I also am helping these old eyes taking the 36x B&L off and using the 42x44 NF. The old Trophy got it done at 200 but my eyes were straining. More power and better glass next match!
But beware, that old 222 ain't giving up yet!
