First groundhogs with new 20p

Thank you. She loves going out with dad. The gun was my winter project and first attempt at a switch barrel. So far I'm pretty happy with my choices. The stock may go at some point though. I just cannot get comfortable the way I would like with the thumbhole.

Lots of great times ahead, thanks for sharing this great picture with us.
Time spent with your daughter will always be remembered and cherished by both of you.Nice shooting btw, keep it up:)

What a little cutie! Making some great memories with kids is a life changing event. Make the best of it as they grow up way to fast. Happy hunting!! :D:D

The 20p is one of my favorite cartridges. That looks like it could be a boyds thumb hole stock or close to it. I really like my Boyds from a bench, but if I get down prone I need a cheek riser to be comfortable, so I bought an inexpensive slip on one and it helps.

Yes it's a boyd stock. I'm not a fan of wrapping my thumb around the grip of a stock and with the thumbhole I've almost got to. I've thought about filing a groove in the stock to lay my thumb in which may make it more comfortable for me.

Those are for sure good times.

Don't be afraid to take on that Boyd's stock. Making it fit to your hand position will make all the difference. Start with 150 grit and go finer as it settles in. I smoothed one down to where I can shoot it either pistol grip or thumbhole grip.

Funny thing here, this hog was right at 400 yards at the shot and the 40gr vmax ever exited. The last 4hogs shot with these bullets havnt had exit wounds of any kid and they has all been at 300-400yards. This 20practical is my first experience with a 20cal so maybe you guys could tell me, is this normal. Ive always used 50gr vmax's In a 222rem and always had good explosive results to 300. Im not complaining because all hogs have been DRT but I have to admit I'm kinda missing the splatter affect. Is the 40gr vmax that explosive that it simply will not exit???

Sounds about right. You’ll not see any groundhog “acrobatics” or much blood spatter at 400 yards with any 20 cal. Indeed, if shot placement isn’t just right Mr. Hog will be crawling back to his hole to die a slow death, or maybe survive to munch on beans or alfalfa another day. I have seen 40 V-Maxes do some nasty damage at 200 or less, though.
Better move up to a 6mm or larger for improved terminal performance at longer range. Even then, I’ve had pass-throughs resulting in crawlers with my .243 Wins. and 6 Rem. — one that was hit a little too low was dragging 3 feet of entrails and still had enough energy to turn on me and make a last stand.
Do enjoy my .204s, also. And, one could argue that if the bullets aren’t exiting and lethally expanding inside, they’re doing their “job”.

Ive been a 22-250/swift guy for years, groundhogs. I can say that I like a 6mm more for groundhogs. Much more satisfying "thump".

I shot a badger with a 204 Ruger last year. It was lying on the ground facing me about 100 yards out. The bullet entered his mouth and didn't come out. I had no idea if I had hit it or not. There were not acrobatics or red mist. That little 32 grain bullet went in and destroyed it on the inside. Only when the blood started pooling at his mouth did I know for certain that I had cleanly dispatched the pest.
