first build, action

This will be my first full scale build and I wouldn't mind anyone's two cents on what a good action, near the $1000 mark, would be.

It would help if you gave us a little more information. What are you building it for?. Plinking, Hunting, Competition?

IF they were still being imported & sold here I'd suggest a CG INCH... but they're not.

Barnard? Heavy-duty for sure, able to take pretty much any chambered barrel you can name (You might also want to get in touch with Mac Tilton, see what he might have on hand / in stock in the way of complete rifles or new / used actions. He's still importing Barnards too BTW: http://mtguns.com)

Any of the Kelbly's. Pierce? Popular Remington 'clone', highest quality. Stiller? Several options there for highest-quality product. BAT? Surgeon? Of course!

At the risk of sounding like a newbie at this, how hard its it to get done if these custom actions tofit in a stock, obviously a 700 clone is simple but what about the others

You can buy other stocks that will take the non-700 clone actions just be prepared to spend double or triple than a clone stock.

Yeah, the best action question will never produce one concise answer lol, although I'm considering the barnard, wondered if anyone knows what the trigger that comes with it is like

Barnard P actions come with an adjustable Barnard target trigger. Those I know that own them, think they're the bee's knees. I've shot them, and I although I personally prefer a single stage trigger, the Barnard trigger is very very nice.

Barnard S actions do not come with a trigger, and accept Remington 700 triggers (like Jewells).

Thanks, from the sounds of it the trigger will probably be more than enough to get me started, also, how can I find out if the model p will fit any standard stocks, considering I've contemplated a nice Bell and Carlson

I am pretty sure a gun built with any of the mentioned custom actions will outshoot the shooter if the gunsmith who does the barrel install and stock work does a good job. Probably true with many factory actions, so you may want to take the approach of choosing an action that operates nicely for you and looks good to you, get a cut-rifled barrel, a good trigger and find a great 'smith. Additional things like wait time and cost may have an impact but focus on something that operates nice and smooth and looks good to you. I have a couple stiller predators and a defiance rebel that shoot far better than I can any day, the same is probably true of a gun I recently built off of a Howa 1500 I just have not shot that as much.

Bruno's has several BAT VR actions in stock. Right around your price range and perfect for what you want to do. Best part is, no wait. In this specialized precision shooting sport, waiting is part of the game!

Barnard triggers can be adjusted to be single stage. I have done this with mine. It breaks at 8 oz. and has a better feel than my Jewells.

My long range BR guns both have Savage PTA's on them. The last one cost me about $550.

I have a hard time paying 2 to 4 times that much for actions I often out shoot!

And, yes, the Accutrigger is different, but I have no problem with 6-8 oz and I do like the lack of slam-fires!

Anyone know what the action will fit in terms of a stock?

If you want the broadest selection of stocks with no fuss or muss, get a Remington action or one of the many Remington clones. You can even buy Remington-style stocks off the shelf with aluminum bedding blocks already installed: no bedding needed. There are quite a few great Remington clone actions meeting this criteria as well as the good ole R700 itself.

Many of the actions suggested are not a drop in and will need stock work if you go that route, including the Barnard, Panda, and most of the BATs. In fact, the Barnard will not fit most Remington stocks at all because the Tang sits to tall. Good Remington clones include Borden, Stiller, Defiance, Pierce and a few others I'm forgetting. Defiance is my personal choice, but it's a bit over your stated price. Then again, so are most of the actions others have suggested. ;)

Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Remington 700 action either and the new-production actions I've examined recently have not needed truing. That would save you some cash.

Scott
