Help with f class action

While not popular, a Savage is an accurate and cost effective option. I've shot with a couple of guys who used the single shot target action plus a prefit Criterion barrel and achieved fclass open records around ten years ago. They tweaked the accutrigger, and I don't recall which stock they used, maybe the Savage fclass rifle. The operability is a bit clunky, but will shoot.

I am looking at this action for my next f-open project
what do you think?
For that price you can get a Borden.

OP, get a barrel in .223 or 6BR to fit your Origin. Shouldered prefit or Savage small shank with barrel nut. Get at least a 1:7" twist for the .223, and 1:8" for the 6BR.

Are you going to shoot factory ammo or do you reload? Forget the 6BR if you are a factory ammo shooter. Put a single load adapter in your action.

Unless there is an F-class match nearby, you probably won't participate as you have already said. Instead, scale down the regulation targets to match the distance(s) you can shoot, and follow the match format, e.g. 60 rounds total for record, in three strings of 20 each.

To be competitive, you and your rig need to consistently shoot 10s and Xs.

I suggest .223 and gear up according to F-TR. See what you can do, and above all, enjoy the practice.

Don't buy a bunch of new stuff for a pursuit that you probably won't pursue. You can get wet without jumping in the deep end.

Northland Shooter Supply can fix you up with a Criterion SS (Savage barrel nut) in .223 match 1:7" for $325. Or you can get a Proof Research shouldered prefit (Competition Contour, aka truck axle) 223 1:7" for $579 from a variety of vendors.

Good advice!
Get your feet wet and learn what you really want or need.

Well, I did the best I could, and I went to an informal type f open match, about an hour from me, and spoke with some people, and watched. Played with two actions, that where out of my price range. Definitely a lot different than I expected. Everyone was very nice and welcoming though.

Also, when I was at my range a few days ago, a women, had a kauger action in an f class set up. (First time ever seeing one at my range). Which was already recommended to me. Started talking to her. Got behind her gun. She let me shoot it. The front rest, the trigger, the action, how the gun balanced. Everything. Compared to what I had next to her, it was like a Lamborghini, parked next to a beat up Honda Civic. Lol. But I believe I have confirmed my suspicion and I will take the venture further into f class.

Even if I can't make a ton of matches I know I will still enjoy it.

Thank you everyone for the recommendations!

Congrats. It's hard not to go to a match and not get hooked. You will find that most in the F-Class community are very welcoming and always willing to help. if you are ever able to go to a state or regional championship, you will likely find that everyone on the line will be very approachable and willing to help. That's how you grow this sport.

My guess is you are going to find a way to get to more matches than you think. Good luck!
