First blood with 6SLR - and the season is over

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

that 6slr looks like a dandy...

In hindsight I should have looked into getting a rifle that was just made into a 243 into one of those, did not know about it until I read this thread.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Got out this morning for 3 hours. Shot 5 in one soybean field. 196, 177, 431, 185, and 329 yards. All but the longest shot were this year's pups.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Got on a dandy (new to me) bean field this evening. Shot 8 hogs with 11 shots, shortest was 279 and longest 532 yards. Still plenty of daylight left but then I realized Dogbone is coming up tomorrow and I'm down to 15 loaded rounds. So I packed up and headed back to the motorhome to do some reloading for tomorrow.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Good shootin' there bud!! They must have been out in full force everywhere .... got 14 here. :) WD

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Good deal, Wayne. Up around AV for yours? I got mine right after a thunderstorm rolled thru. The rain cooled things off and I think that is what brought them out a little earlier than normal.

About half way between us is where I got into these. My partner got 9 the same eve. WD

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Doug (Dogbone) and I shot a bean field about halfway between us yesterday morning. We got 4 there before moving south and east of my location for the afternoon and early evening before rain chased us out of the fields.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

I guess they are called HOGS for a reason.

Anyone that could be seen at 858 must have been as big as a HOG.

Would be nice to know where all this shooting is happening.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Well, I use 10X range finding binoculars to find them and a Sightron 10-50x60 to shoot them. I shot two over 1000 yards last summer. At those long ranges, the binoculars only tell me there is a brown object - the scope tells me its a groundhog.
Central Ohio is where all the shooting is happening.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Shot 4 today with the 6XC. All four were in the same corner of a soybean field and were at 296 yards give or take a couple. I have a ten in a row string going with two of those just over 400 yards.
Season total now stands at 66. DANG!! I have a long way to go to equal last year's total of 427.

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

I feel your pain Nomad! Last year I was 55 at 4th of July! Today I sit at 26 :(
I have been giving my recently discharged Son my "Honey Holes" and enjoy watching him score. That brings me more enjoyment than trying to break a record. I know you share the shooting with several others also. Keep up the great shooting! ;)

Re: First blood with my new 6SLR

Thanks, MrM. I got 4 this morning in a large bean field - all just a little over 500 yards, then I got 6 this evening in a different bean field. Three of those were under 150 yards, the fifth was 502 yards, then I missed at 482 - and my string of consecutive one shot kills stopped at 19.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - Eagle steals g'hog

You guys aren't gonna believe this. I still find it hard to believe.

A friend from Dayton, OH came over for a day of groundhog shooting with me. It was raining this morning so we headed to a large soybean field in a river bottom that had an equipment open sided shed where we could park and keep dry. After he got one (light rain at this time) in about the middle of the field, it was my turn and we spotted one on the right side of the field near a woods line. 470 yards, DRT. At least we thought so as it disappeared in the beans and we heard that distinctive 'thud' when the bullet hit. While I was removing the empty case and checking velocity on my MagnetoSpeed chrono, my friend said a hawk just landed on my hog. Now we're both watching thru our scopes and we can see the head has some white on it. Then the 'hawk' tries to fly with the groundhog. When it spread its wings, we both said "That's no hawk, that's a young Bald Eagle". That eagle fed on that hog for a good hour and tried to fly away with the hog a couple more times.
I had a mature Bald Eagle feed on one of kills once before but the groundhog had been dead for an hour or two before the eagle started feeding. And I have even seen hawks chase off buzzards at a kill, but today was a first.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - Eagle steals g'hog

I believe it Bill. Saw the same thing the other day in a cut hay field up here near me. It landed within 150yds of me and just took its dear ole time eating its picnic lunch. They sure are a magnificent bird. WD

Re: First blood with 6SLR - Eagle steals g'hog

Word to the WISE Bill

Knox County ODNR Agents are checking Ohio Hunting Licenses.....this pertains to residents and non-residents.

If I recall correctly, I remember the last time we met, you did not have a non-resident Ohio Hunting License.

It would suck to get all of your fine hunting gear confiscated....

Re: First blood with 6SLR - Eagle steals g'hog

I've been paying $125 for a non-res hunting license for the past three or four years. I think your memory may be a bit foggy. ;)

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed 100, just shy of 1000

Season total now stands at 101 after shooting 4 today. Longest was 525 and sadly I had two misses. Just shy of 1000 rounds shot this year - round count stands at 996.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed 100, just shy of 1000

Thanks, MrM. Got 4 this morning - all 250 yards or less. And round count for the year is an even 1000, but that won't last long. ;)

Re: First blood with 6SLR - slim pickin's

Shot 2 yesterday morning, 1 this morning, and didn't even see a groundhog this evening. Bad news is the beans are getting too tall to see them. The good news is this morning's was 642 yards, a new 'long' for the 6SLR.
