First blood with 6SLR - and the season is over

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

I have pretty much settled on the 6mm's. And I guess bullet selection had a lot to do with my choice. The 105 AMax is really nasty on varmints out to 1000 yards or a little beyond and even does well on whitetail deer out to 500 yards or so. And the 105 Berger Hybrid carries pretty well to 1000 yards for shooting steel. I'm not saying there aren't better bullets especially in the larger calibers, but the 6mm's are a good compromise for me.

Here's another setup.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

A regular 243 only gets about 1,000-1,200 rds. of accurate barrel life. The AI version is even less. The 6SLR is projected to be 2,000 rds. of accurate barrel life. Possibly more.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

Nomad, looks like an awesome rig. What bullet are you mainly using?

Swamp, I'm aware of the barrel life issue with the 243AI and alike. But based on what a mate see's from his 243AI barrels, I don't think barrel life is that bad. He ha gotten 2000-2500rds from one barrel and would still shoot 1.5" at 300m, a second that would still shoot 60s in F-Class out to 1000yds with 900rds on it. He runs his loads around the 3200 mark. His new Kreiger in 243AI looks really good in the throat with around 500rds on it. Just gotta chase the lands and tweak loads as you go. That what I will be doing with my 6x47L rifle.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

Quickoz, I hope you're right about longer barrel life. I would like mine to go 2,000 rds. Would be tremendously happy. I would be even happier if I get 1500 rds. out of my 6.5x284.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

I think the secret is to clean often, he cleans every 24-48rds or so. That and just takes good care of them. Hopefully he may see this thread and pipe in. I always thought that its only like 800rds or so and then I Saw the way his barrels shoot with that many on and was impressed. If I go that route, ill Rechamber at 1200-1500rds depending on condition of barrel.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

I clean mine after every shooting session, but during a match there is not time to clean, so the barrel must be shot until the match is over.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

How many rounds is that? I've taking my 6x47L to about 75 rds between cleaning but will be cutting back to 24-36rds (2-3x applications in F-Class).

Re: First blood with 6SLR - passed the 150 mark

Quickoz, 105 AMax only in my 6XCs. Mostly 105 AMax , some 105 Hybrids in the 6 SLR. And I plan both in the 243 AI as well.

Ray, yes, I find the 6 SLR quite interesting, also fun to shoot.

Doug, I thought you might recognize the location. I got 5 there a few days ago. We had the steel set up just left of the red barn and past it. 550 yards if I recall correctly.

Nomad47, Do you know how fast your pushing those 105 amax's and I may have missed it but what twist are you using? Also did you say Preacher did your Smithing? Not many good Smiths out this way!

Ray, I was running the hBN coated 105 Amax's a little over 3200 MV, but I've been getting sticky bolt frequently lately, so I'm backing off to 3176 fps - 28" 8 twist and a mighty fine job of chambering by Preacher.

I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but the other day I fired 6 shots checking for sticky bolt. Two were 45.1 gr 7828, 105 Hybrid, 3211 MV, two were 44.5 gr 7828, 105 Hybrid, 3168 MV, and two were 44.9 gr 7828, 105 AMax, 3209 MV. These were shot Round Robin and I was primarily paying attention to the bolt stickiness and observing primer pressure signs. To my surprise and delight, all 6 went into one ragged hole at 100 yards.

Thanks, I can see that in my future especial when I can use my .243 brass! Maybe Preacher will Ream and thread it.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - grannddaughter success

Took my 11 year old granddaughter with me this evening. BTW, she shot a deer last fall. After showing her how to look thru the scope and adjust the rear bag (I adjusted the front elevation for her), we settled in and started scanning with our binoculars. The first three were between 150 and 200 yards and she killed all three with three shots. A fourth appeared in a recently mower pasture at 272 yards. She wanted to try the shot so I swung the bench around and got the groundhog in the scope for her. At her shot, I didn't hear the customary 'thunk;, but the groundhog never moved, just layed there, clearly visible. We resumed our scanning, assuming the groundhog was dead. After a few minutes, I happened to look that direction to see the groundhog with its head up. The rifle was already pointed in that direction and when I took a look thru the scope, the groundhog started heading for the woods. So I took the shot. I didn't lead it enough and my shot was just behind the boiler room. So unfortunately it took about 30 seconds to die.
When it was time to pack up, I told my granddaughter we had to take a look at that one. So we made the 272 yard hike, crossing two fences. What we found was her bullet had hit where the jaw meets the neck, taking off almost two inches of hide, apparently knocking it unconscious. Since it was in an active pasture, I picked it up to toss it in the weeds. It was a huge 'hog and felt like I had just picked up a 16 pound bowling ball. Easily the heaviest groundhog I have ever shot. Just wish I had a scale with me.
Season total stands at 165.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - grannddaughter success

There's a nice article in the current issue of the Varmint Hunter magazine about an SLR built in Pa
It sure is an appealing round. :)

Bill,

Sounds like you had an awesome day with the granddaughter.

17VLD, any chance of a link to that article?

Re: First blood with 6SLR - grannddaughter success

Well Bill the VHA does have a nice site and some misc articles.
www.varminthunter.org/ They also have an online subscription
available not sure about it,I'm too old fashioned for all of that cyber stuff, just enough to get in trouble here.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - grannddaughter success

That's great you took your granddaughter out Bill! I wish either of my grandfathers would have lived till I was that age and also, that they were into long range woodchuck shooting! I would have been in hog heaven, no pun intended ;)! My season total stands at 48, total between my friends and I standing at 62! We were told the other night that if we killed 100 woodchucks there would be the purchase of a keg of beer! That's well and good for my friends but, doesn't do much for me as I don't drink!

Hey Bill, is this the same grand daughter that showed the dairy calf at the fair??

Did you take her out for ice cream after the hunt? ;) WD
