First blood with 6SLR - and the season is over

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

628yds on small game is a long way mate. Good shooting but. How much did you miss by?

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

I couldn't see the bullet splash on the first shot but the second shot splashed about 4 inches over its head. Apparently he didn't like it because I never saw it after that.

I shot two over 1000 yards last summer - 1062 and 1017 yards. Yes, it is a long way. Just a brown dot in 10x binoculars and not a lot bigger looking thru a 50x scope.

I've got a place where I can set out my 8" diameter steel at 1300 yards. I would like to try out the 6SLR and 243AI at that distance but I want a witness - just in case I have a hit. ;)

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Bill,

I'd come and witness it for you if I could get to the USA. 1000yd kill would be the pinnacle of many a hunters career. Sure would be of mine. I look forward to more stories :)

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Hey Bill, is the 243AI a new rig? Pretty for sure. Seems like your count has gone up quite a bit since I last visited this site.

Have not been around much due to the house cleanup and packing. She finally sold a week from yesterday. We're living in the motorhome not far from the house. Will be here until the 24th when we leave Jersey permanently to head south.

Will be in OH a week from today. Any chance we can do some shooting together again? I know now that the 18th and 21st are no good, but I should be able to sneak out one day of that week. Let me know.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Thanks, Quick. I killed two of those 'nasty' groundhogs last summer at over 1000 yards - 1062 and 1017 yards. That was two out of 427. But this year I haven't even seen one over 900 yards.

BTW, I have a friend from western OZ that shoots F Class at his local club. His name is Andrew. Would you happen to know him? I haven't communicated with him in over two months since the wssmzone forum got shut down.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Hey Doug (Dogbone). Sure, just pick a day and come on up. We will be leaving on the 26th, heading to western PA to visit my sister for a few days, then starting the 6 day trip to AZ.

Yes, the 243AI is new. I got it a month ago tomorrow - only have 210 rounds down the tube. I haven't completely settled on a load as I just finished fire forming 200 pieces of brass.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Sounds good! Will give you a call when we get there and have a better idea of what's going on. See you then.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

After all these months of being home, cleaning out the house and packing it up to sell and then move, I finally got the chance to shoot at the 8" steel target I bought way back in May with the 243.

Started at 200 yds and worked my way up by 25 yd increments to 325 yds which was the length of the field I was shooting. Shot 4 to 6 rounds at each distance and did not miss until I got to 275 yds. Missed two at that distance and two at 300 yds.

Then for some unknown reason I was missing regularly at 325 yds. Could be cause I was trying different bullet weights, but even the tried and true Hornady Superformance in 58 grs was not making contact???

All in all I had a great time for several hours making that steel ring. Guess I'm set to start taking down some groundhogs with Nomad in two weeks. Well not at the distances he normally shoots, but we'll have fun anyway.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

You betcha we'll have fun.

Shot 6 this evening - with 6 shots. Shortest was 117, longest 468, one at 315, and three at 2-something. Season total - 235.

Glad you got to ring that steel, Doug. It can get addictive.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Nomad, I'm so jealous. That's awesome that you get to travel around in your motor home and shoot tons of varmints. What stock is that on your .243AI?

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Bill, I do know an Andrew who shoots F-Class? What's his last ne or better yet, what rifle he shoot? If he's F-Open I probably know him, there's only a few of us here in western Aus.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Waterfwlr, buying non-res hunting licenses can get expensive. I buy one in Ohio since I shoot so many 'hogs here. We spend a few days each year visiting my sister in PA and I sometimes sneak in a few hours of 'hog hunting there. In AZ and NC, its mostly steel and paper. But if the opportunity presents itself, I'll buy a 3 day license to shoot prairie dogs while I'm out west.
The stock on the 243AI is a modified Savage 12BVSS stock.

Quickoz, his name is Andrew Gibbons and he shoots a 7mmWSM and a 25 wssm. If you know him, tell him I said "G'Day, Mate", and tell him to pay a visit to this forum.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Mmm, I don't know Andrew Gibbons. But if I run into him, I'll pass the message onto him.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Man I would love to do that when I retire. No woodchucks around here and I only go out west for pd's once a year. Nice rig you have there. I am considering the 6slr. Do you have a pic of that rig?

Here's the 6SLR. I also have a 6XC barrel that shares the action/stock/scope.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Thanks, Guys. it killed 3 more this morning. Nothing special - longest was 462 yards.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Bill, to me, 462yds is special. My longest kill to date has been 220yds with my 308 at kangaroo. Nearly took a 285yd Roo about a month ago with my 223 but has 1.5MOA of wind on and bullet flew right in front of the darn things nose!!! My goal is to break the 300yd mark this year. That will be using my 6x47L hopefully.

Re: First blood with 6SLR - omnivorous groundhog?

Quickoz, you probably don't have a portable bench to shoot roos from, either. Or a f T/R style bipod. I'm really lousy shooting off hand. Of course, trying to hold a 16 pound rifle steady while standing is tough.
Last year was special, with two kills over 1000 yards. I don't think I have killed one over 700 yards this year. And I think the longest attempt was under 900 yards.
