first 6br build need input

This is my first post on this forum but I have been reading it for a good while. I am building my first bench-rest rifle and not sure what type of stock to get. It will be a 6BR on a trued Remington 700 SA and a Krieger 28” barrel with 1-8 twist in the HV contour. I would like to try some of the groundhog shoots and some egg shoots. I would also like to be able to shoot some of the 100 to 300 yard shoots and may be even 600 yard shoot. Really this rifle will be sort of an introduction rifle to try various brench-rest type shoots. I would like to hear some of your opinions.

The 28" 1:8" is a good choice if you'll often be shooting at 500-600 yards. If the vast majority of your shooting will be at closer distances, you might consider shooting the 80s from a 12-twist. But the 1:8" will be the most versatile.

Sounds like you have a good plan--just have a real good smith do the chambering and barrel crowning. After that, with the 6BR its pretty easy. With the 100-107 gr bullets, start with RL15 or Varget or N150, about 29.00 grains. Each barrel is different. You may end up somewhere between 29.5 and 31.0+ for your best loads.

Shoot over wind flags, and get a Wilson ss Micrometer seating die when you have a chance. For full-length dies, I recommend a Harrell's, or a custom hornady, or a Forster with the neck honed to give .002 neck tension. Forster will hone the neck for you for about $10 on top of the die price. The Forster is the cheapest option. The Harrell's or Hornady will take bushings.

Welcome to the forum. There really is no combination to do it all. An 8 twist 6BR wont get you far in short range benchrest, but is great at 600 yds as well as the egg shoots. For short range work. a 13.5 or 14 twist is ideal for the 6mm's, and the PPC is the cartridge of choice. Also, the stocks generally used in the long range game don't conform to the rules in short range BR. I guess if I wanted one gun to do it all, I would build one where the stock conformed to short range rules, and have multiple barrels. The
BR barrel you described, as well as a PPC barrel and a 30BR barrel,if you are close to score shoots). The stock would incorporate a weight system to take the rifle from a 10.5lb gun for short range, to something in the 14 or 15 lb range for the long range matches. It would be an interesting project for certain.

Thank you for the quick response. I understand that this setup will not be the idea setup for short range matches. I was thinking of this as sort of a starter gun hoping to make it like tightneck stated “one gun do it all” to see what type and range of bench-rest shooting I would like to pursue. I don’t expect to make the nationals with it, just want to shoot some bench-rest shoots along with other type shoots and enjoy the company of other shooters. I am not going to try to make the 10.5 lb gun class but maybe the 13.5 lb class. With the 28” HV contour I would like to find a stock with maybe a longer forearm that would be legal for short ranges but don’t know all the short range stock rules yet. There are so many types of stocks not sure what type would be best suited. Would the Kelbly Klub, because of the longer forearm) or the Kelbly 1M type stocks meet the short range rules?
If my thoughts on the longer forearm are way off please let me know.

The Klub is designed for short range BR, but I'm guessing that the 1000yd version has the bottom of the butt running parallel with the forend. This is a no-no in short range. Go to the IBS webpage and read the rules regarding stocks in 100/200 to see how to conform. All the makers of BR stocks provide stocks that already conform, check with different makers to get just what you want. Most of the stocks for the short range game will work for long range, but the taper can make it harder to get back on target as fast.
