help me build my first 6mmbr.....

Well, let me start off by saying hi, and that I've found this website to be extremely helpful. In fact all the research i've done has been from this website, and I just wanted to say thanks to the people and members that make it possible. I still have a ton of questions, so bear with me! So let me tell you a little bit about what i want out of this gun. I'm looking to build a benchrest/varmint rifle. I want a rifle that i can get "bug-hole" accuracy at 100 yards and still take out to the field and crack a groundhog at 400yds. Most of my shooting will be from 100-400 yards, however, i still would like a rifle capable of decent, 600 yard accuracy. Will be shooting custom bullets 62-80 grain. So with all that said, this is what i've come up with:

Kreiger 1 x 12 about 24"
heavy varmint countour
neck chamber .271
trued rem 700 short action
Kelby br trigger
richards custom stock #005

Well, how does that sound? Hope i didn't ramble on too much. I've been bouncing around trying to figure a good twist rate, i think the 1 in 12 is a good comprimise.

With that kind of setup, realisticaly what kind of accuracy can i expect at say 100 and 300 yds? and how much difference does a custom action make? can a finely trued rem action shoot as good as say a stolle or bat? well, i guess that's it for now, lemme know what ya think!

Hi

I too would go for a 10 twist barrel and finish it at 28" in a HV contour. 28" inch barrel to get the velocity up a bit more!

Action, if you do not want to spend to much I'd look at the Stiller Predator action. Nice bit of gear for the price.

I'd shoot the 75 and 87 Vmaxs....

The Kelby trigger looks like a winner.. but again for the price I'd choose a Jewel!!

Cheers

I would also consider the Lawton action in moly or SS, any port or bolt config and same money,$695) for the 1.350 and 1.450 diameter actions. the single shot actions have a .5 longer tenon.

Bruce Baer has them in stock. I am picking up a 6BR DX Wed from him that he built for me. He is also a 6mmBR "Top Recommended Smith"

Bruce says that they mike out as good as any action he has seen.

I don't see why varmint hunters won't use a faster twists? I would go with a 1:7 twist and use the VLD's out of 29-31inch barrel myself. If you can get 2920FPS at the Muzzel with a 105grain Scenar,or other 105 grain VLD) with a BC of .530 - .535 then you'll be still be supersonic out to 1425yards. You'll still have a bullet doing Mach 2.0 out to 420 yards. I don't know it's just that Drop is easily compensated for it's the wind deflection that is hard so I would pick a bullet that would give me as large a margin of safety when aiming at a target as small as varmints like p-dogs and so on as possible. Just my thoughts on the topic but then I don't hunt just shoot targets.
