First 600 & 1000 Yard Shooting Experience

michaelnel

Old and In The Way
Today my buddy and I went out to the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center and shot at the 600 yard and 1000 yard ranges for the first time. That was the most fun I have had shooting in the whole 40 years or so I have been shooting!

Mike and I shoot a lot, usually twice a week. We have been developing loads for our .308 and 6mm BR rifles at 100 and 300 yards, and finally decided to take the plunge.

"Dangerous Bob" Dorton and the other guys at the range were terrific. Very patient and very helpful, and they are truly a bunch of old pros (one of them shot a 3 1/2" five shot group at 1000 yards while we were working in the pits today). We got zeroed in at 600 first, and I shot only one five round group with the .308 and a couple with the 6mm BR. I don't recall the size of the groups, but they weren't bad.

Then we went and worked in the pits pulling and marking targets, that was a lot of fun too! After the 1000 yard guys were done, we went out to the 1000 yard benches and I shot my 6mm BR, and my buddy only shot his .308. He shot 12 and 13" five shot groups with the .308, and I shot <mumble> and 8" groups with the 6mm BR. I say mumble because I was so excited to be shooting at 1000 yards I plumb forgot what they said the first group was.

Anyway, for the very first time shooting at those ranges we did pretty well I think. There is a lot of improvement to be had, but we'll get that with more practice. The regular shooters there welcomed us into their community, and I can hardly wait for next Monday when I return to do it again.

Sounds like you are enjoying the newest phase of your shooting, that of the longer ranges. Since my club built both 400 yd and 600 yd ranges a couple of years ago I made the transition from 200 yds to 600 yds and I have found myself addicted to it. Although I only have 2 long range rifles I have a lot of other ones that I need to get back to and shoot at the 100 and 200 yd range. I really miss sometimes just plinking and shooting for fun at clays on the 200 yd berm with my AR15 and my Ruger Target 22 but I must say the 600 yd range is now my range of choice.

I am one of the regulars at the Sacramento Monday practice sessions. Often, we get some hunters out to try long range with their super duper magnums and often can't even get on paper!

These guys are the exception, they can shoot and they were nice folks!

They may not know it, but they were shooting with Ken (the slightly over 3" group) and Gerry who are both long time experts with national records in their pockets!

Hope to see you again.

By the way, there is a 1000yd club match this coming Sunday!

Thanks guys!

I have to learn the names and pin them on some faces. We talked with Ken some when we were taking down flags, so I know who he is, and we talked with Gerry some before we started shooting, but I don't have name / face matches for the rest of you guys yet!

Some time I will come to the matches, but I work Thu->Sun so I will need to arrange a vacation day for that. Mike said he may go this Sunday though. We live in Angels Camp, so it's about a 1:15 drive for us each way.

I too am a new shooter to 600 yds. Qualified for my club's newly opend 600 yd. range back in June. I've shot three sessions thus far, and man is it gratifying to consistiantly nail 9's, and 10's at 600 (especially for me as I have very poor eyesight). Previously I was only shooting 200 meters. The wind is the only frustrating factor for the new shooter, but i'm slowly learning how and when to attempt holdovers. I'm looking into the Sig Sauer Academy's "reach for 1000" instructional class next spring. Enjoy !

Glad to hear you got bit by the bug and now have the disease :) I also started my shooting at Sac Valley. It is an incredible facility with nothing but freindly and helpful people. Maybe I'll see you on range 12 some time.

Yep when you hit targets at that range its lots of fun. I brought my 73 year old father out to the range 2 months ago and let him unload on 25 steel turkey silhouettes at 550 yards with my .308. At first he was shooting slow. Then I loaded up the 5 round mags and he would blast 5 shots in a row! I havent seen that big of a smile on his face in many many years! Glad you had fun!
