600 yard groups?

For you BR types shooting 600 yards... What kind of groups are you seeing? I'm figuring they must be pretty tight, even at that distance...

What are the favored cartridges for 600 yard BR competition? Why?

Thanks, Guy

Group sizes, of course, depend on the conditions. But, a very good single target 5-shot group is close to 1 inch and a very good single target 10-shot group is twice that size. Favorite cartridges are those that will shoot groups of the that size. I'm not being a smart a$$, there is no predominate 600 yard cartridge as yet.

Joel Kendrick was the IBS 600-yard shooter of the year, campaigning a 6x44 made from 6.5x47 Lapua brass.

Don Nielson won the recent NBRSA 600-yard Nationals shooting a 6.5x47 with 130gr JLKs from Swampworks.

Ron Tilley had the best Light Gun Group Agg and Score Agg shooting a straight 6BR. Billy Copelin had the second best Light Gun Group; I believe he is shooting a 6mm or 22 BRX, but maybe he's running a different cartridge.

As for group size, I'd say 1.5" is very good and close to 1" is spectacular. In perfect conditions I know a lot of guys are trying to hold 1" of vertical at that distance, but the wind always gets 'ya.

Right now I'd say the popular calibers are 6BR, 6BR improved, 6-6.5x47, 6XC, 6.5x47, and 6.5x284, but there definitely seems to be a bias to the 6mms--so far at least.

Dang. That is just flat impressive as all get out... I've gotten down to 2.5" at 600, but that seems to be about as good as I can do... Takes pretty much perfect wind & light conditions too.

Thanks for the info guys. Gives me something to aim for...

Trust me, the wind & light conditions at the Sloughhouse 600 were ANYTHING but perfect....

Lynn, you got those pictures of the remains of the line cover? I think those would really tell a story.

It's a pretty decent .308/Rem 700 that I've shot in some NRA prone matches, any rifle/any sight catagory) as well as in some practical/tactical matches. The rifle does fine - it's the driver who messes up from time to time...
