My sister is in Lake Oswego (also on level 1 notice). We had/have a fire 8 miles from my house yesterday (Eastern WA) and air quality plummeted. At least up to 519 yesterday, and visibility is about 300 yards. Now we're waiting for all that smoke from central OR to get here. Had to put the garden harvest on hold because you can barely breathe out there. Pray that the winds stay calm, or this could get a lot worse. Best of luck to my friends in Oregon.

It could happen. This is the view in a lot of places in OR and WA. I wonder if now we can get some traction to maintain the public forests that are close to populated areas? Not holding my breath......

I would try and find a big truck for sale or a rental by the week to get as much out as possible. Then I would buy perforated sprinkler hose and put it all over the roof and turn the water on to try and save the house.

Here in Spokane we are currently at 496. That didn't stop us from shooting a round of sporting clays this morning. Shot my best score ever. An 89. Starting to feel like I smoked a couple cigars though.

Yeah I hear ya. We woke up to 519 today and it hasn't gotten any better. I've never smoked a day in my life but the smell is just noxious at this point. I really feel for those that are even close to the fire zone.

I have a real good longtime Bud in the Yamhill area. He has a big collection of collector cars and bikes along with a 3000 sq ft machine and fab shop. He also has a big barn with vehicles stored. He said he might move some to a big pasture as his house is mostly wooded.

It's bad. We're dropping currently. Now down to 488. Prediction is that it starts moving out by Monday. You guys are a lot closer though. Like to see another nice cold north wind.
Air quality today is 549 for my area. It's been like that since Tuesday. We can smell it in the house. With the air that bad I won't work out or even practice my trumpet indoors. I did turn on the fans for both HVAC units a couple days ago so the air is being constantly filtered.
I did finally find a way to accurately measure the distance from my house to the closest part of the fire, and it is 11 miles. They said they got a contaminant line around that part of the fire. What is especially concerning is that I live right on the edge of a forested area.
I have never liked living so close to the 150' tall Doug Fir trees. They are a mess. In a wind storm they throw fir cones at the house and in the yard along with branches. This year the threw a bunch of small baby cones maybe 3/4 of an inch long, and that has been a constant mess. Of course the big concern has always been fire, because if those trees catch on fire it's game over. If we ever get to build a place where we want, I'd like a five acre flat lot with the house and shop in the middle.
They did take a couple of small areas close to me down a level but I am still in Level 1. Level 1 is get ready, Level 2 is get set, Level 3 is go now.
The inversion will start lifting tonight which should allow the smoke to start clearing. With that there is potential for the fires to increase, though with the better weather the air assets can get in which will be a huge help. There might be a little rain this week, but not much. It usually doesn't rain from July - Sep in this area. The climate changes for damp to desert dry.
La Nina has set up in the Pacific. The colder ocean temps will make for a very wet and cold winter in the PNW. That will be good for fire fighting, will get snow pack back in the mountains and fill the rivers and lakes back up. That should help hunting and fishing over the next couple years.
I really feel for the people up the river. The entire town of Blue River was wiped out. It also took out the house of the area fire chief as well as the fire station.

European countries, for all their flaws, seem to understand that without active forest management, you get devastating fires.

I agree. You hear all this talk of global warming causing the fires, but if this is true then why is mostly in the US. If global warming is happening then why is it only effecting the west coast of the US.
Eastern US forest land is almost all private and well maintained like European forests. Also, it is the West that has had the drought.

Out west here where much of the fires are happening, we have pretty huge populations of homeless people, (bums) living in all manor of homeless encampments in the areas bordering the interstates, bridges, on/off ramps. Their garbage is incredible, the filth is indescribable, and they smoke drugs, weed, tobacco, and cook on fires wherever they live.
Many of them have Social Security Disability benefits, usually for being a hopeless drug addict. They have lives that would make the old "Kings of the Road" green with jealousy.
I would be amazed if some of the fires aren't started -- accidentally or on purpose, by some of these folks. jd

There is no still no credible evidence of arsonists starting large scale fires. There have been a few small incidents where the arsonists have been caught.
Wildfires are very common here in the Western US, especially since they quit maintaining the forests out here in the 1980s. We have several every summer. We routinely have windstorms knock down power lines, and when that happens in the summer during a drought we get fires. We also get fires from thunderstorms since the storms out here have lightning but not a lot of rain--unlike the Southeast. We also have fires that are started by accident or carelessness.
I oppose marxists and anarchists as much as anyone, but already have enough on them to shut them down. We don't need to risk losing our credibility by blaming them for things they probably didn't do.
Now if they ever do find such evidence I'll be glad to add the forest fires to the marxist/anarchist rioting, looting, building fires, minders, and all the other hateful stuff they do.
