Firearms shipping

Seems like almost overnight my shipping and receiving of firearms came to a screeching halt. If you want to ship a long gun 500 miles FedEx wants $189 ! I shipped a rifle through them last for $40. UPS told me you had to be a ffl holder in order to ship.USPS said you had to have a ffl to ship.

I'm a non-licensee (non FFL holder). My recent experiences:
I shipped long gun UPS Ground to an FFL. I don't recall exact price but it was on the order of $25.

I shipped numerous pistols recently via UPS. Pistols, per their policy, need to go overnight. That did get a little pricey. Never over $90.

In all cases I had to provide copy of FFL it was being sent to. (Which from what I've later learned is not a Federal requirement to have. The Fed requirement is that it go to an FFL.....not that you have a copy of their FFL But it's highly encouraged to verify the FFL via their EZCheck website. And my experience is that *UPS* requires a copy of the FFL.)

I know of no recent law changes to make shipping any more onerous than it already is. I think one of the things we run into is individual shipping clerks not knowing some of the nitty gritty details.

I've shipped numerous long guns via USPS and FedEx ground. Last one was from Michigan to Texas for $35 via FedEx. Didn't have to provide a FFL license to them. Just drop it off at the FedEx ground location and declare what it is. Done.

Shipping rates have went up somewhat this year, a lot of the cost is how you want it to go and how much insurance you want. Handguns must be at least 2nd air and long guns
can go ground.

USPS doesn't call for an FFL. If they tell you that, have your postmaster read his training manual.
With good insurance it ain't $25, more like #100+.

The first time I was shipping a rifle out of my local post office the post woman told me she did not believe I was allowed to do such a thing. I promptly told her she should become acquainted with her manual and know her job better. She started to get a little huffy with me. A male postal worker told her I was absolutely correct. She wasn't too happy, but she accepted the well packaged 75lbs. rifle and case. This was some years ago. I ship plenty of firearm things out of there and they all know it and are very pleasant to deal with.

I have used: https://www.shipmygun.com/go/
and saved a bunch of money, especially on handguns.

OR, Since the carriers heavily penalize a non-FFL for shipping a handgun, I just have my FFL ship them USPS Priority for me. The $20 they charge me (plus the USPS Priority charge) is far cheaper than me shipping overnight.

Mine does also

You were lucky they accepted your package seeing as the postal limit is 70 lbs.

Yes, shipping has gone up considerably in general. It is my belief that we are subsidizing Amazon. They get "contracted" rates from UPS. Fedex did not renew their contract with Amazon, said all the package volume from Amazon was affecting the service they provide to their core market.

Why would anyone at the post office know that you are shipping a gun? I have never been ask what is in a package, I only have to verify that it is not one of the restricted items.

My understanding is that the head dude at FEDEX is one of the biggest supporters of the NRA so it's hard to believe that he'd allow this.

I always ship long guns by U.P.S. by ground and pistols by second day air. You must bring them to a terminal and not to a ups store. They are independent owned and will tell they can't ship a gun for you. Just save a lot of headaches and bring it to the terminal. I worked for them over 40 years so I know their policies. later

The purchaser is on this board and received it with no issues. I think that rifle has past on to at least 5 owners now and another barrel from what I understand. Dragman killed a groundhog or something like that at over 1800 yards with it.

These days I take them to my ffl (4) so far. They package them for free, I throw the one that packaged the rifle a few bucks because they will not charge me. They ship them ups and I pay their cost. I've been dealing with this guy over 10 years now.

The easiest way is to ship your long guns (rifle or shotgun) by Postal Service. If it crosses a State line it MUST be shipped TO an FFL. The Postal Service DOES NOT require YOU to have an FFL to ship. The Postal Service does NOT require you to have a copy of the receiving party's FFL either. You simply comply with the law. If you don't, and you get caught, you will be prosecuted.

You cannot ship a handgun through the Mail unless you are an FFL and it is going to an FFL. Doing so is a Felony.

UPS and FedEx set their own policies in regard to shipping rates and requiring you to ship overnight, etc. Try another shipper if you want to and let us know what you experience.
