Firearms Related CC Purchase Cancelled

I purchase the majority of my loading and equipment online using one of two credit cards. I have perfect credit and a large line of credit, no issues there.

Today, I attempted to purchase a rifle stock online and my Capital One credit card was denied, which threw me for a loop. A second try after checking spelling, address, etc. was also denied.

I received an email from the company asking me to use another payment option, sure enough another credit card was immediately successful and the order was placed.

I contacted CapOne and got the run around on whether they denied the transaction since it was firearm related. Asked for a simple yes or no and got a word salad.

So, maybe I’m behind on this issue, but are these transactions being denied? I’ve never had a problem with components, powder, etc.

I will check with the vendor and if this is the case they (CapOne) lost a very good customer. It won’t be in my wallet any longer.

I had a similar occurrence one time. Almost exactly as yours. Called, got the same type of run around, but politely explained my feelings to them, and hung up. Used the same card shortly thereafter for some reloading components, and went right through.

And.......never had a problem again. So, not sure what was going on - but, like you, really pissed me off when it did happen.

After a few similar experiences and investigation it turns out the vendors I was buying from had been the victims of fraud and were a hot spot for attempted fraud purchases. The vendors were the issue not me or my card etc
Then I had cards fail to go through with vendors that had no issues in the past. So after a talk with my bank I discovered that they had max protection on my card and that I could tell them to lower it and accept any charge that came in. Good for me maybe not for them
You simply have to contact your card provider and say allow all charges and then You Folks worry about it
Simple as that.
And… if you are traveling contact your card provider and give them a list of states or countries you will be in and a date range and you will not have an issue at all. A pain but that is the answer

I have a capital one and haven’t been refused for gun related purchases yet. Just made 3 different orders the last couple weeks. Two of the orders were a week apart to Gunshack LLC. With that business name I’m sure Capital One could figure out what I was buying items for…

I had two purchases fall through for gun related items using my credit card via Paypal. In both instances the vendor accepted Paypal. A glitch? I'm not sure, don't use Paypal much any more now.

Well. All the reason I need to run my card through the shredder.
A well known 401K account management company is going to see several hundred thousand dollars go to a different company because they weren't capable of giving me a straight answer, either. Just waiting on the calendar to hit a certain date.....

My discover works on most gun related purchases, but I have had it not work. I think its just due to the website and the amount. For example i bought a tract scope 2 weeks ago and it was 1500 and that would not work. The seekins rings were too low, so i decided to get the mdt rings from tract. The rings for 130 went through with the same card.

I like My Cap 1 cards, very nice company for me
but will admit I have not tried purchasing an actual gun with one
Only gun related parts and components
their online App makes it so easy to change addresses if need be etc .
------------------
Could be if you tried purchasing your gun from another state is the issue???
Which could red flag as "Suspicious Activity" even though its legal.

I will say, I used to use "Square" to accept credit cards for my business
and within 2 days of adding Gun related services to my website
such as trigger jobs and barrel threading
Suddenly out of the blue....Square cancelled me and I was no longer able to accept credit cards
Which was a major hassle since I had to come up with a different form of billing for my repeat customers
I also called Square and got the run around
No answer as to why I was cancelled, when I had been using them for years prior to that.
I had to then use a different form of Electronic payment since.
So just a heads up on that for anyone using "Square" for their business
Dont add firearm related stuff to your services.

Also if you have made too many "RECENT" puschases, it will deny you after a certain amount.
I've had that happen with my business ATM card. There is a daily limit programmed into the computer.
It can only be increased or changed if you request so before hand.
So perhaps plan ahead if you want to stock up on reloading supplies or purchase anything of great value

I hope the OP gets the stock. There’s one specialty vendor that is the problem itself, taking money with no inventory to sell.

And midsouth just consummated a sale to me when I replied to an email about my shopping cart status for two 8 pound jugs. They implemented a feature asking me a series of questions I answered.

When it didn’t place the sale, I closed the app. When the cart email came, I replied to the email that because of the new feature, I ordered 3 jugs of that powder from Natchez instead.

Midsouth then later on consummated the charge for over $900 despite the fact that I wrote that I bought from Natchez instead.

That’s quite annoying as the powder is yet unknown to me.

I had two gun-related transactions denied by Discover in the last few weeks. Trying again for each transaction with my Apple card was successful. I know what people might say about Apple, but like Discover, there's no 3% foreign transaction fee. Both transactions were for items in Canada, so perhaps that had something to do with it.

   THAT's what EVERYBODY that gets jerked around NEEDS TO DO!!
BIG Banks AND Credit Card Companies don't care about the little guy!!
When the customers bail, only THEN will they take notice.
Got bit by a few BIG banks so I've learned from experience.
Got jerked around while trying (with a DPOA) to deal with my big sisters finances.
Got bit, took me maybe 5 minutes to close her account and move HER $130K to MY bank. They treat ME like a KING!!
Another BIG bank started doing strange things so I closed THAT ACCOUNT and MY bank got her business.
Deposited over $650K in an estate account in MY bank. Like I said, they treat me like a King!! :):)

I understand that PP doesn’t do firearm transactions, am I correct on that?
That is my understanding. What puzzles me is why some companies selling gun/shooting related items like scopes and reloading presses list Paypal as a payment method. I learned my lesson and just use the credit card now.

Had a cap one card i used for a Midway purchase years ago. Tried to
use the card a week later and it was locked up for a fraud alert. I got the
item from Midway, and called Cap one on the problem. Someone used
my number for an Air BnB. They corrected the issue and sent me a new
card. exactly one year later, and also Midway, It happened again with
another Air BnB. I called the Fraud alert hot line, and simply said, you
have a problem with a Midway employee going on vacation at this same
time of year......They corrected the problem, and jacked my 12 % card to
28 %. Cancelled the card the next day, and have not purchased anything
from Midway since. Funny how to think about things. Uncle Larry of Midway
retired that same month......Currently, the two cards I use are at my local
credit unions. Always a person on hand and close by i can talk to direct
without a Hindi / Pakistani call center accent......
