Fire frming 6.5 x 47 into 6.5 creedmoor

I know the standard is 22-250 but I want to try forming the 6.5 x 47 lapua into the creedmoor round, I am guessing the neck will end up shorter but the small rifle primer should last a lot longer with hotter loads. Can it be done safely?

Just try 308 Palma Lapua brass.. That's what I may try for another project..

Any of you guys interested in a couple of hundred rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor made from new 308 Lapua brass??? Its all sized down trimmed and neck turned ready to load. I have gone a different direction.

What kind of issues did you run into with this step down?? Any donuts? I'm thinking about using 308 Lapua brass for sizing into a 6mm Creedmoor. I'm interested in pushing max pressures an also having some case life..

I used a 308 bushing die and I had the bottom of it machined off. It was either 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch. I don't recall right now. It was the difference between the two cases. After running it through the bushing die I used my Dillon power trimmer to trim the neck down and then neck turned the cases and sized them in the 6.5 Creedmoor die.

What did you do, put a 6.5mm bushing or something in the 308 bushing die??? Have you tested converted Lapua brass in a Creedmoor before and what kind of velocity or pressure difference did you get??

Would expanding the neck on 6xc brass to 6.5 and fire forming work better/ easier?? Just curious. ??? WD

If I remember correctly I used a bushing for a 7MM and then after sizing it down and trimming and then turning the necks I ran it into my 6.5 Creedmoor die.

I only fired about 30+ rounds because I was doing some load development for a new rifle. I will have to check if I have any crono numbers. I am not sure if I chronographed the Lapua loads or not. If I remember I was using a lighter load than with my Creedmoor brass because I was more interested in fire forming it without running the brass with a hot load. I was new to the Creedmoor and not sure what the caliber or rifle would like.

I had about 100rds of Creedmoor brass and basically just used it to do some load development I got a good load with 139s and then could not get any bullets for months and then lost interest and went to the 7MM. As I recall accuracy was really good with a Varget load and a light load of 4350. I just tossed the targets a couple of weeks ago when I cleaned out my loading room.

Did you use the 308 die to ease forming the shoulder into the 6.5 Creedmoor neck or any special reason... I'm thinking about buy 2-3 differant collet dies to machine down in hopes of pressing out the 6mm or 6.5mm necks better without donuts..

I used the 308 bushing die because I had an extra one laying around I had picked up in a trade. I actually think a 7MM-08 die would be the best to do the initial sizing with. But with the bushing it really doesn't make much difference what you use. Once you run it through the die and do the trimming and neck turning its just a matter of running it into your Creedmoor die to set the final resize. I backed my die off a bit because I didn't have the rifle yet and did NOT want to undersize the brass and ruin it before I even had a chance to fire it.

I did try going down to a 6MM with it but did not do that until after I had fired a case and had annealed it. It went right down to the 6MM with no problems. I just ran the case into a 6XC die with sizing lube. I didn't have anything to shoot it in so I am not sure how they would be.

With new Lapua cases I had no problems at all sizing the brass down. When I first started I tried some old 260 brass that I had made from 308 Lapua and I would get some crushed cases. I then annealed them and then I had no problems. So I used the old brass to figure out my method. Hope this helps!!

Thanks, I'm new to wildcatting but I feel the way to go is practice making your brass first before buying the chamber/barrel... Like you said, get everything worked out.. I feel like I'm going to try the 6mm SLR or 6mm Creed... I have a 6.5 Creedmoore Collet die coming I may work into the sizing down mix, plus I can drop a 6mm bushing into my 6.5 Lapua die if need be for something... But, I will be purchasing a 7mm/08 Lee Collet for this project...
