Fire forming to 223 AI

I have fireformed for several different cartridges with just 700X and butt wipe. I saw no need for filler, however you still need to work up loads, as you need to find the balance between almost formed cases and too much pressure.

Pasture Grizzlies love to assist in the forming of all kinds of Ackley improved cases...........

Trust me.....;)

"I have fireformed in the basement....."
The above is kind of my plan, alf.
I have done the cow method in the past, forming 300AI.
Never just used tissue.
Can you give me a place to start???
Thank you for your response.

I can't give you specifics, as I haven't done any 223 AI's that way. Mine were all shot on/at prairie dogs.

I've done 22-250 AI and 22 & 6 Dasher with butt wipe.

I have found when you fire form brass, you might as well enjoy it by shooting. Since the throat erodes as much if not more with cow, the flame goes straight to the lands unobstructed just like an acetylene torch, and also never do more than 50pcs at a time. Round robin those pcs and when they are done do some more, or else it will seem all you do is fire form all the time and never enjoy it, besides some of my most accurate loads have been fireforming loads.

I tried the COW method years ago. It's kind of a mess to clean up plus I don't know what effect it may have on a barrel.

Lots of guys fireform 30 BR brass with a fast burning powder (I use Bullseye just because I have a bunch). Fill the case to the neck/shoulder junction with powder, pack a quarter of a sheet of Cottenelle in the mouth and fire. SmokinJoe uses a plastic ball to hold the powder in.

The barrel gets hot pretty quick so I do about ten and let it cool. Most folks use an old barrel for this purpose.

There used to be a little envelope one could click on to send another member an email. It appears it's no longer around. I also can't get rid of the thing that says click here.

I still have your email address (I keep everything) so I'll send you one.

A true AI chamber will headspace the parent cartridge the same as it does the AI modified round. My 30-06AI shoots regular 30-06 loads just fine. Only issue is, I never get 30-06 brass back. It is always .30-06AI formed and ready to go. I shoot a lot of wildcats. (did I say a lot?...I mean a LOT.) I have done the COW method, the cast bullet jammed in the rifling method, etc. Now I am old, lazy, thriftier, and bored easily. Rather than sit in the back yard firing COW into the forming bucket, I load a round, specific to my chamber, that will fireform AND give me some pleasure, like knocking over steel animals, or even furry ones. Over the past few years I have formed probably 1500 TCU cartridges from .223 brass while shooting them at steel. These loads are just as accurate as the ones shot with already formed brass. Why waste the 8.0 grains of Unique, tissue, and COW when you can load up a 55gr FMJ for a couple of cents and blast varmints and cans and paper and and and until you are tired. Fast to load .223 and come out as .223AI.

My nickel's worth....

Steve :)

Don't fire form in your basement! You are contaminating your house with lead. Primers have a priming compound that contains lead.

I've got a 22-250 AI. I decided to forgo the cow method and instead purchase standard 22-250 ammo and use it for paper and varmints. The accuracy was exceptional and the end result is perfectly formed 22-250AI brass.
