fire forming new brass

To fireform brass without expending expensive bullets and powder, try the C.O.W. method (Cream of Wheat). In your .308 brass prime, use about 12-14 grains of Unique, and fill the rest of the case up to the neck/shoulder junction with Cream of Wheat, then plug the neck with a piece of toilet paper. Shoot these outdoors and your cases will be fireformed to your chamber. I saw another method of plugging the neck, in this one they used Crisco.

Why use cow or corn meal or bullets into the lands? I am starting with new Lapua 260 brass. The cow method does not force cartridge head against bolt face. The bullet method wastes bullets, primers and powder and barrel for nothing. My question is why not just load using your pet load in the first place? You then can compare with the next load to see improvement in accuracy. I take it that the only reason to fire form standard calibers is to move the shoulder forward, measure and adjust die to set the shoulder back say 0.002 for subsequent firings. I speak only of standard calibers not forming AI or converting to another caliber.
I’m just trying to understand.

Using an over the counter cartridge with no neck turn, I would agree. Beside forming to the correct headspace it also forms to the body of your chamber.

I was thinking driving a carpet tack with a sledge hammer;) My humble advice would be to load up your best load and shoot'em. I've shot some of my best scores (OK prolly not all that good compared to most on this thread) with virgin Lapua cases. The only thing I did was run a mandrel into the new brass cause they were too dang tight from the factory. You may have to tweak your load just a little for your second or third firing, but probably not much (depending on how big your chamber is). I've also seen factory Gold Medal 308 ammo outshoot very carefully crafted reloads on more than one occasion. Just some things to ponder--feel free to ignore.

That's when drag racing was drag racing, not the commercialized crap that they call drag racing today. I'm talking about the pro categories.
Might say Fiat on the grill but it has a Big Block Chevy turning the tires.
