Fire forming brass

I'm looking to fire form some 6.5 Grendel brass out of 220 Russian,I think this is the original parent case). On the 6mmPPC page of this forum, it says that you can fire form 6mmPPC cases out of 220 Russian by just loading it to the neck with Bullseye powder and sealing the case with wax. Has anybody tried this method? It sounds like the way to go considering you don't have to waste bullets to fire form the brass. Also the pressures can't be too high because you are not forcing anything up your barrel. Any info would be appreciated.............Malcolm

Try a couple. I fireform 223 AI brass with 16 gr. Bullseye and cream of wheat with a toilet paper wad on top. You have to experiment to see what combo gives the best results. Also, use pistol primers.

You first have to create a false shoulder for the 220 Russian case to headspace on otherwise you're going to get misfires and/or stretched cases that will eventually seperate. I would NOT start with a case full of Bullseye. Start with 10 or 12 grains or so and work up. Use regular rifle primers. You will probably not get a fully formed Grendl case until the first bulleted load so why not simply shoot a bullet to begin with? Now that Grendl brass is available, why go thru all the bother in the first place? But if you must, create a false shoulder and start out low on the Bullseye.

I formed 45 6ppc's yesterday with an absolutely packed case of bullseye and a small piece of cotton patch on top to hold the powder in. If you would like your brass to fully form, you will need a full case,I know from experience). If I slow trickle enough powder in the case, they are ready for a match on the next firing. My method incorporates a 33 gal trash can with a half of a roll of insulation stuffed into it and a hole in the lid for the barrel. It really keeps it quiet in my garage, just kind of a thud. I do have to repack the insulation about every 10-15 shots. Dont know what the pressure is but it will flatten the primers. I'd say if you do go this route, start with a not so packed case and see what your gun will take to get a good forming on the first shot.
