Fire Forming

Hey Guys,

Screwed up on my last post. Here's the correct question.

Can I fire form .220 Russian brass to chamber in a 6mm BR chamber/rifle?

Thanks for the help and sorry about the mix-up.

John

.220 Russian brass is formed into one of the PPC cases, not 6BR or anything else in the BR case which began life as ~ a .308 Winchester but with a shorter body.

You can but if you expect to use those cases ever again you don't want to.

PPC cases have heads 0.440" diameter while 6BR are 0.475". Smaller cases fired in a larger chamber will be so deformed - even if they don't split - they're useless. Too you risk damaging your chamber from the misdirected propellant gas escaping everywhere but down the bore as intended. Worse you may damage your boltface and extractor, maybe YOUR face & eyes too from said gas coming back at you.

I inadvertently fired a 6HAGAR case (rim dia. 0.422") in a 6XC-chambered rifle a few years ago. Base to shoulder dimension's almost exactly the same so it chambered just fine & went BANG when I touched it off but the ensuing gas cloud keyed me in to having done something wrong pretty quick.

Bullet hit target (@ 600 yards I was AMAZED!) high & left but case had split almost full length base to shoulder.

Moral: fire-form cases of the proper parent brass in a barrel suitably chambered for the cartridge you want to make up brass for.

A reloader can not fire form 6mm Remington cases to 6mm Br. The reloader must learn to form first then fire.

Well you know the datum line meets the chamber the brass will move and produce the headspace needed for the average reloader, but keep in mind you only need to bump to the shoulder to the third datum line that is perpendicular to the lands. :)

Thanks everyone. Just checking before I start loading. Have a 6mm BR rifle and trying to get started in bench rest. Trying to gather as much info as possible so I don't make to many mistakes. I don't think that is way out in Timbuktu.

Thanks John

Just keep asking questions about things you don't understand before you attempt anything! Very few people were born knowing everything like some here ::).
I would suggest you read as much as you to get you started in the right direction, however, there will still be questions you need to ask to get things straight, so don't let bad replies deter you from learning. Stupid people don't ask questions they just plough straight ahead, you seem to be starting out right to me, just keep on reading, asking questions, and thinking. You'll catch on 8).

Thanks,

Been doing a lot of research and reading. I've got no problem asking if I don't know. I've always been one to help new shooters as I've helped many friend of mine get started in the shooting sports. Believe me, one person looking down from their self imposed ivory tower is not going to bother me. I've been shooting and reloading for 20+years and I'm always looking for and glad to learn new things.

Thanks for the support,

John

It would help to have know you have 'the rifle' when you started the thread with all the information. It is in vogue to use your specifications for a chamber reamer, then choose the action and barrel 'and then' order a set of dies using your specifications. Before I start I secure the parent case meaning if I can use the 30/06 case to form cases the cost me 10 cents each maximum. Then there is the cost of forming dies.
