Finding the lands...Tool!

Do you get the same measurement regardless of how long you seat the bullet?
No. The idea is to zero out the indicator on a sized piece of brass, then seat a bullet long into that same piece of brass. It doesn't matter how long, as long as it contacts the lands. When you measure it, the case will protrude by ever how far it is from just touching the lands(long). So, we start with the indicator at zero, load a long dummy round and lets just say the indicator reads .076(random number). Your touch point is .076 shorter than your dummy round that you just measured. If you want to load a dummy round at just touch, simply seat your bullet .076 deeper in the case. The only thing that touches the case is the light spring pressure from the indicator tip. So it's both very light and very consistent. The tool really does work great. You can also use it the check shoulder bump precisely. Just use an unsized case, zero out the indicator, then size the case and check it with the tool. The indicator will give a negative number that is your amount of bump, in your actual chamber. You just have to be sure that the unsized case fully bottoms out..well, both but the sized case should bottom easily where the unsized piece might take some thumb pressure, depending on how tight it is in the chamber, of course. You can sort by bump and/or seating depth really quickly with the tool, if you're so inclined. Super simple and fast.

No, to both. It's just comparing an empty but sized case, to an sized dummy round loaded long. The indicator is just telling you HOW long from touch. So, you just reduce OAL by .0205 and that IS your just touch point. Simple. Don't overthink it. Happy to help but it's just that. The long seated round is telling you exactly how much too long it is, from just touching. That's the indicator reading. Shorten the seater by .0205 and that's exactly your touch length.
how do I order? What part of KY are you in? I may just pick it up.

Mike - How does the tool know the distance from the ogive to the lands? And, would this work for 223?
Thanks

You use a case sized to fit the chamber and zero the gauge using that case. Seat a bullet long and re-measure. The readout will tell you how much you are from zero/bullet touch. Run your seater die down that amount and you should be at touch. It should work for any cartridge.

It's all in the video he posted.

Yes, like WSnyder said....it's using your actual chamber so it doesn't get much better than that. It's very accurate and repeatable. Fast and easy. It just requires the bbl be off is the only down side. These are going to work for virtually any bbl with a 1-1/16 tenon so it won't work on the large shank Savages and the few actions out there with larger tenon od's. I could modify a few to work with those but the nut on a Savage makes it tough as the tool indexes off of the bbl shoulder. It'll also work on smaller tenons, like a Winchester or Ruger 1" tenon but it'll obviously be a loose fit over those tenons, but will work.

Now I get it. Thanks!

They're a go! Just getting the first ones done and tested. Works like it should.
I updated the thread yesterday...or was it day before. Either way, I'm waiting on more indicators. The seller was on vacation until Monday and they'll take about a week to get here from California. Couldn't find enough on hand anywhere, so I have to wait for him to get back.

I put just a few together and will start shipping next week but not many until I have the rest of the indicators here.

Price is $30 each w/o the digital indicator and $70 each with. Shipping is $11 either way. I will combine shipping on multiple piece orders on a case by case basis to minimize shipping costs.

I'll try my best to get back with everyone that has posted here or pm'd me about them but it's gonna take a couple of days. Handy tool that I think you'll enjoy having. Thanks!--Mike
