Finally got to try my hand at long range

Me and a friend finally took a day off work to go shoot at a range that went out to 750 yards. The place is in northern Indiana and took us about 2hr 45min to get there. Nice place to shoot with many lanes and berms out every 100 yards to 400 then it skips to 550 and then 750. We took steel targets to shoot at with a 4 inch and 6 inch on a hanger we set at the 550 and we had a 10 inch we set at 750. Took a couple of shots to find our dope but we was easily hitting the 6 inch at 550, few more shots and we was on the 750, what a hoot we had a ball and shot all day from 9am to 5:30 with each of bringing 3 guns. I took my 6.5x47, 6mm Creedmoor and my 7mm08. My friend brought his 308, a 6.5 Grendel AR and his big 338 Lapua mag which was the only gun that he could not get on target all day, problem was if you miss you have no reference to where the shot went to make adjustments? We even got huge 4ftx4ft cardboard up but you couldnt see shots so he gave up on it because for some reason it was really far left?? Here is a picture down range and I marked the 550 and 750 target frames. Were spoiled now and want to go again...

What rifle and load are you runnin' in 7mm08?
It's a Savage model 10 action with a 24 inch Shaw heavy stainless 1-9.25 twist barrel. Hornady brass, 38.1gr of RL-15 pushing a 162gr SST seated .050 off. At 550yds it shot 4 in about 1.250 inches into somebodys shoot-n-see target,... oops
My best results all day was my 6.5x47 Lapua shooting Sierra 123's and RL-15, all day it was super consistent, pick it up aim and "ding".... loads of fun not having to worry about group size or collecting data just plain'ol shooting for fun!

Ain't that a gas? Something about hitting a dinger at distance, just gotta love it.

The local (Austin TX) Best of the West 1000 yd range got shut down a couple years ago, and I've been a bit gloomy since with nowhere to stretch the legs on my 6.5 CM or 6BR.

This past winter a new range opened up just a few miles down the road, called Reveille Peak Range.
https://www.rprrange.com/ located in Burnet county, TX.

They have a 100 to 600 yd range, a new 700 & 1000 yds range, and the 650 to 1705 yd range. They also have regular PR competitions, 3 gun and other challenges. You can even shoot out of a Huey mounted up on a platform.

I got out there last week with a shooting buddy and took my 6br for a walk in the park hitting the 6 inch target at 600 yds with ease. As I broke out the 6.5 CM the wind really picked up and I missed the target a few time with wind shifts, but all in all, a great time.

Once I've got some time at the longer ranges I'll be doing a write up.

Congratulations on your trip. Sounds like you had a blast ringing the bell at distance!
