Filming your while shooting

Anyone else do this to help diagnose shooting error? Started doing it more and more for my YouTube and more and more it's been showing me alot lol. Like I honestly feel like in the moment before and after a shot im usually doing everything right and I get kinda confused when my groups look like crap. Well I take the footage front hat same groups and well.....
Like currently the main one I'm doing it with is my little S&W 15-22 I got set up as a trainer

I'd shoot one group , amazing,another dog crap, three dog crap two amazing, though it was the gun or something but after goin over some footage I took just because , what I thought was talking me three minutes to shoot 10rd was really talking me one minute. Was slapping the trigger,no follow though , sloppy grip just alot of stuff that I honestly thought I was doing right in the moment.


Then I go back today with this info and double down hard on doing it right and I'm shooting bug holes ( well for this gun)
Honestly considering getting one of those newer scope cams to see if I'm actually calling my shots properly or moving my reticle to much!
Anyone elese happen to do this ? Did it help ?

When I was shooting on the Army Post pistol team our instructor would occasionally observe a specific shooter during practice sessions and note errors in fundamentals. So, I believe this is a good idea.

You're already on the way to being a better marksman because you are engaging in structure practice, diagnosing your shots, and most importantly you have the desire to get better. In other words, you do not shoot aimlessly just to make noise or play "Navy Seal."

You may want to also consider keeping a range book to log in each practice session making notes. I found this to be very helpful and have been doing it a long time.

See that's one thing I really miss about the army. Having someone there whos really good really has all the fundamentals down to watch and give you pointers. Having someone I knew was more experienced then me really helped a lot. Also the competitive aspect of it. My unit was a FSC support ing three infantry companies so when had lot of their tendencies. Marksmanship being one. Like in my platoon anything under 32 out of 40 just plain was acceptable . Didn't matter it was over passing 32 was the low bar for recovery lol ! Now however it's either I'm one of the more experienced people shooting in the group( which kinda terrifies me at times ) or people will just tell me what I'm doing is good enough and stop making a big deal out of it. Again hitting a can @100yd off a lead sled is like sniping to many around here lol. Not trying to knock anyone just is what it is.

But as much as I do like mag dumping and making noise, idk I just dont not like being able to hit something precisely. It's kinda become and addiction so what can I say. It also gives me a good outlet for my hyper fixation to go lol.


Haven't considered a range book however. Think I might look into that !

Stuart and Annie Elliott from Australia have been using video cameras at least for 25yrs. They have done shooting lessons around the World for many years. They supply each person a disc afterwards. They are many times on the World team and shoot several disciplines rimfire, air rifle, fly shoots and others. Probably have the best shooters supply company also.

I used to film with "high 8" tapes? Camcorder in early 2000s. Glad I did. Someone called the police and said there was a madman running around the range with an M16 and shooting wildly. State police showed up and they said they got that report. We watched my film. They left.

I was given this tip years ago by a friend. Still to this day, may be the best tip I've ever received. I strongly recommend it for improving on your bench manners and how the gun is working in the bags.

Find the video of Bart shooting. He's was shooting fast but the mechanics are excellent. Not a bad guy to model your bench manners after either.

I need to start doing this. Easy enough to do these days with a phone on a mini tripod. I think it would help e keep to task and not be such a squirrel in my range sessions.

IMO video for self coaching is a great idea. Have you done much dry fire practice?

When they legalized night vision for coyote, I setup my buddy's rifle with a Wraith. He called me saying he missed a coyote(bait setup at about 175 yards). This happen a couple times during the week. On the weekend I went to his farm(120 miles). I put up a paper coyote target(175 yards), set the scope for day shooting and put 2/2 into a 1 inch orange sticker. Told him to take a couple shots, didn't tell him I set scope to record video. He took one shot, I asked him to let me see rifle. Set it up on my bags to watch recording. About 30 seconds for the shot, most of it a shaking sky shot as target enters bottom of video. Reticle on the target about a second, an unstable shot high and right(he is left handed). Showed him the video, told him digital scope, reticle needs to be steady 3 seconds, target(coyote) must be still also. He shoots again, hits orange spotter(heart outline on target). Showed him the target. We hunted the weekend. I went to his brothers farm to watch for a coyote coming into livestock area, he sat on a bait site. Called me said he shot one. He proceeded to shoot 7 the next week, was super happy with the new scope. I would say video can work well for correcting problems.
