Filling and painting savage f class

Not really sure where to put this. Looking to paint my savage f class factory stock. Would like to fill the vent holes up front, what do you think is the best material is. I was thinking bondo since it's easily sanded and painted. Would it stand up to recoil? Any suggestions welcome.

Are You referring to the vent holes along the barrel groove area? If so I would avoid the bondo I would fear shrinkage over time could cause issues. Today's bondo is much better than it used to be but it would still be my 3rd choice. First would be cutting some wooden plugs that fit tightly and put some quality wood glue in there for good measure. Second would be a high end epoxy with a thickener added to keep it more manageable. All 3 would probably get you a similar result short term.

Bondo!! If it stays on dented fenders for YEARS, I see no problem on stock forearm vents. Keep it simple.:D
Used it to plug the selector switch cut out on my Mil. M1A glass stock maybe 15 years ago and it still looks like it was just done.

Something to consider if you choose to go the Bondo route. Too much heat from the barrel can cause the filler to lose adhesion.

I like the wood plug idea. A perfect fit wouldn't be necessary as you could leave the plugs a bit below the surface and then use a filler such as bondo to finish it out.

I will say that I have used bondo to fill in barrel channels when going from target to sporting contoured barrels and never had any problems despite it being a fairly thick layer, but I'm hesitant to call it the "right" way to do the job.

Wow, the Savage wood stocks are some of my favorites. Dunno why, I just like them.

I agree with the above. Bondo doesn't seem perfect, but it will probably work well enough. Heat and recoil from the .223 version would be less of a concern than the .308, 6.5, etc.

It would be nice to see pics before and after to see how this turns out.

Dura glass is a heavy body chopped fiberglass matt. This stuff is indestructible.
And lightweight. It would fill in one app. Do the fill coat with Dura glass
Finish with light glazing plastic (bondo) Available at your local auto part store
