FFP or SFP? You be the judge

I was ready to order the Vortex Viper 4-16X50 for my SCAR17S. FFP is a $200 option. I've been using non mil dot SFP scopes for years. This will be my first serious tactical scope. I spent two hours researching this but would like to hear from end users. FFP or SFP?

Are you going to be using the scope to range targets? If so, then I vote for the FFP. You can range with either FFP or SFP, but FFP makes it much easier.

I prefer MOA, because it's easier for me to grasp the concept and that's all I've ever known. Does that make it better? No.

Whichever one you decide, just make sure that if the reticle is in, make sure the turrets match. IE, if you have a Mil Dot reticle, it's best if the turrets are in MILs.

If you are dependent on the reticle or plan on using holdover exclusively :FFP.
For any other situation..........SFP.

Keep in mind that with a FFP, the reticle will "grow" as you crank up the power. This could be a problem with very small targets at very long ranges.

You can still range with a SFP....you just have to remember to turn the ring to the ranging power on the scope before ranging.

If I was in the field and ranging all the time under stressful situations, I'd want a FFP. For the kind of stuff that I do on the range, I prefer the SFP.

As far as MRAD vs MOA, again, under tough field conditions, I'd go with FFP and MRAD. That way there's no confusion or coversions on holdover.

Just playing around on the range, I'd stick with MOA.

My problem with FFP, and I have a few IOR and USO, is that the reticule all but disappears of low power, just when I would want it to get fatter.

For me, this means they are not variable power scopes, but fixed on max power.

FFP= If your going to need too call/correct your missed shots. It's easier to fathom you missed by 1mil/moa at any power. If your going to be using the reticle for ranging unknown distances at any power. Both aspects are great when the mirage gets kicking. I rarely use max power on my scopes, so it's good to know 1mil at 18x is the same as 25x when you make a bad wind call.

Depending on the types of shooting. I'm doing Mil for tac-match PRS style shooting.
MOA for BR and F-class type shooting. Especially since MOA scopes also come in 1/8 adjustments.

I know some will complain about the reticle growing on FFP scopes, on a technical aspect it doesn't grow, if it covers .5" of target on 6x it'll cover the same .5 at 25x.

If you are going to range with your scope any finer than min. of torso at any distance use a range finder and SFP scope. If you just want to have some fun ranging and playing around with a sniper set up ( which I think is a HOOT ). Then go with an SWFA Super Sniper fixed power $299. with a mil/mil set up and have at it.... ;)

I laser range, dial elevation(hold-off for wind), for Groundhogs, and all my efforts center on single shot kills.
It's my rule that if I miss, that GH lives another day.
SFP for this all the way.
