FFL Easy Check

Is this check legal to ship a fire arm The FFL doesn't send his license to non FFL's but gave me the first, second, and last numbers of his license I checked and his address is the same as on the license Phone number is correct. Do I also need a copy of his license? I have never done this before Thanks

The "easy check" or "fast check" is still a NICS check. It gets done by the receiving dealer before he can transfer the weapon to you. The shipping dealer has nothing to do with it. Usually, the sending dealer requires a copy of receiving dealers license so he knows he's actually sending it to an actual FFL.

A FFL can receive a firearm from an individual from any State. All the individual has to do is make sure he is shipping to a FFL. The FFL E-Z Check is one way of doing that. The exchange of certified copies of FFLs is only required of FFL holders. Call your local ATFE office for clarification, rather than take any ones word concerning firearms law/regs on the interdnet.

Easy Check is a perfectly valid way to verify that the FFL you're shipping to is valid/up to date and that the address is actually their correct business address.
Now, as for shipping, I usually will call the dealer in question if I have any doubts that what I am shipping is not allowed in the state it will be shipped to. That certainly applies to pistols and AR type weapons. I've never had any issue with shipping a bolt rifle even to CA.

FFL EZ Check is NOT a NICS check. It is an on-line method of checking a FFL, to make sure it is valid. The EZ Check is part of the ATFE web site. Enter the first 3 digits and the last 5 digits of the FFL number and click on 'enter'. The FFL EZ Check has nothing to do with a NICS background check. It is used by FFLs to make sure a physical copy of a License is valid or for an individual to verify a FFL IS legit.

If shipping USPS, they do require a copy of the FFL of the receiving party - at least my Post Office does.

A scanned copy of the FFL, emailed to me, which I then print, has worked well several times.

Alex

PS. I am NOT an FFL holder.

The reason FFL EZ Check exists is so copies of FFL's are not in the hands of non FFL holders to help circumvent forgeries.

USPS has no valid reason, legal or otherwise, to ask for copies, let alone be told there's a gun inside the box.

The only thing they can ask about a package is the following:

“Is there anything inside the package that is liquid, fragile, perishable, and potentially hazardous, such as lithium battery or perfume?”

According to the following USPS website:

Keep the Mail Safe: Hazardous and Restricted Materials
Some things cannot be mailed or can be mailed only in small quantities for safety and legal reasons.
Some items have restrictions on how they can be mailed, including:

  • Aerosol cans
  • Firearms
  • Flammable materials
  • Liquids and powders
  • Lithium Batteries
  • Lottery Tickets
  • Perfume
  • Poisons
  • Tobacco and tobacco products
Some items, however, are not permitted in the mail, including:
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Ammunition
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Fireworks and other explosives
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the following ATF website:
https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-nonlicensee-ship-firearm-through-us-postal-service
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess when they ask what is in the package, the person doing the shipping does not have to disclose anything.
The only issue may be if the shipment gets lost or damaged.

Therefore, when the Post Office asks me, I tell them it is a rifle, and since the recipient (if another State) must be a licensee, they want to see proof; i.e., the FFL.

If you are counting on the US Post Office for anything more than the rankest, most belligerent stupidity and ignorance, you're gonna be disappointed.

I have shipped numerous rifles and shotgun through the postal service w/o any one asking for a FFL I always make sure I have one from the FFL I am shipping too My original post was to determine the validity of the FFL Easy Check and that has been answered Thanks to everyone who responded Lou
