Feral Hogs: Exotic Game

i hear ya Cliffy... you'll not catch me living in the city though but i also do love my comfort..
2 1/2 days away from home... i didn't bother unpacking it was just get naked an hit the shower quick as a bunny... i'll take my own bed over that mummy bag i used for a couple a days..

:)

Nothing like bbq with a nice fresh hog. I love to hunt them. Unfortunately I am fairly new to hunting because I didn't know any hunters in my area. I did get an invitation to hunt a tomato farm here in S. Florida last year for my birthday. I took 2 hogs and made some great meals out of them. I'd have to say they were the best tasting hogs of the ones I've shot.

Florida has quite the hog population and you can hunt them year round on private land...of course I don't know anyone with land and haven't found a lease yet. But, I'm looking.

Aloha Rich,

Sorry to hear you never found your hog what a bummer! Sounds like you enjoyed yourself except for the weather and coffee ;D

Which one is you in the picture?

Heres a pic of my daughter and I on her 2nd hunt last month on the 24th my Dad's B-Day.

Aloha Rich,

Yeah she's really excited about hunting but dancing and singing classes has her all tied up on the weekends so she can only go hunting when she has a break.

Is that the lodge and Blinds that you hunted out of??? How high is it off the ground? I can see what youre talking about the steep angle of the shot being that the blind is high and the bait kinda close. Wish you better luck nexttime!!!

Man, That sounds like some BRUTAL coffee for sure having the runs for two days sure isnt fun thats for sure.

Yeah I guess thats how it is for the time in any type of hunt not really knowing what to expect etc. Thats how I was when I went to Africa ended up taking way more stuff than I ever needed but was well prepared the next trip over.

Ok I got you now in that pic its good to see who youre talking to at times. Take care and best of luck on your next hunt.

Aloha,

Dom

Hogdogger- I must say I give all my respect to a man that goes at it in hand to hand combat with a wild hog! A friend and I go down to SC. to hunt hogs every year. Last year My friend told me he was going to stick a pig. I didn't pay much attention to it and just figured he was getting fired up about the hunt as time got closer to go. To my surprise the morning he stops by the house to pick me up he has no weapon other than a 8" bowie knife! I told him he was crazy, still thinking he was messing with me. When we get there and he starts talking to the owner of the property as to how things will be done and what to expect I stood with my eyes locked on my friend telling him he is crazy! Basicly to make a long story short. The dogs heamed the hog up in a Creek. My buddy goes in from behind grabs the hogs hind leg and starts to knife the hog! After serval attempts the hog is still fighting him and the dogs! Finally he got the knife blade into the neck an hit the hogs spine.

Myself I'll just stick with the box blinds and shooting them in the ear with my 270wsm. Needless to say I told my friend he needs to learn where to stab a hog before he does that again! I was wondering how you go about knifing hogs? Surely there is a better way than the John Wayne appoach my buddy tried! He is wanting to try it again this year. We leave in 2 weeks! Any tips before my buddy does this again and doesn't come out so lucky this time?

Aloha DeadlySwift,

Thanks, yeah alot of my friends and family feels the same way and they worry bout me alot but the truth is I LOVE IT!!! Its just something in me that really love pursuing boars like that. Anyway back to your question about where to stab a hog. We stab for the heart so we stab right behind the front leg either one doesnt matter. Just above the elbow of the front leg straight in and move the blade around a bit you will know when you hit the heart or major plumbing as the blood will GUSH out and the hog dies quickly.

Heres a side on pic of a pig that has been stabbed right behind the leg wish I knew how to photoshop it to show the exact spot but if you look closely you can see the entry just above the front leg elbow in the pic hope this helps and goodluck on your hunt in a few weeks!

Thanks hogdogger- I will show my buddy this pic. I'm sure it will just get him pumped up and wanting to go before its time to leave! Last year he stabed to high from the looks of the pic and from what you are telling me. He stuck the pig a couple of times behind the shoulder but about middle ways of the body. I guess he was still deer hunting lol. I like to watch the hunt unfold but just don't have the guts to attempt it. I was standing 20 or 30 yrds away and could hear and see the hog slapping his jaws together. Swinging his head back and forth up and down at the dogs. When my buddy started to work his way behind the hog I reminded him don't forget he is fighting for his life, and he had better do the same once he committed! It is exciting action Tho!

Good luck on furture hunts

Dom ..
yes it was a lodge it was a paid trip non of us ' 9 in all ' ever hunted there or hunted a pig before, when i was invited a fella drop'd out
the blind i was in was at least 14 ft standing off the ground possible more, i guess they are used as a deer stands, the lodge is private club an most members hunt deer only.. one guide had mentioned.. i noticed they have a large number of locked lockers in the club house taking up one whole wall
with such a large track of land we driven to our stands an then left alone.. both or night

geez i know how that goes when my kids were young i'd have them out fishing, or target practice an nature walks deer tracking an such.. as they grew my daughter had dance classes an my son played all the sports baseball football he tried hockey too.. my daughter can shoot well but hasn't in a long time.. my son is a bow hunter first then rifle ... last yr was the 1st time he mist a hunt [deer].. he has been testing for sheriff department.

nice to talk with ya
Rich

deadlyswift..
i usually will try anything once .. but at my age now.. maybe back tweenty yrs ago.. the knife is out... the a bow handgun an rifle will be more like my speed now.. i wish you an your friend lots of luck on the hunt...
wondering where in SC you fellas go to hunt pig... ? i'm not to far from the border .. just curious

Rich,...

thanks deadly...
i assume thats Chesterfield, SC- Chesterfield County.. an not Chesterfield, SC- Beaufort County

either way its a ride from wilmington, nc

RichG,...

Deadly- Yeah it sounds like he may have stabbed a bit high and only got a lung thats why the hog kept fighting. When you stab them in the heart death is VERY QUICK matter of a few seconds if that. Best wishes on your upcoming hunt and yes tell your ffriend that once he commits he must go all the way as things can change in a hurry and you dont wanna be standing there face to face with a pissed off boar. They are lightning quick and very powerful animals when I got cut in the past it happened so fast that I didnt even know until a little while later. Have fun and be safe and hopefully catch one with tusk like these or bigger!!!

Aloha Rich,

Same here glad to have met (in a way ;D) and talk with ya!

Thanks for the info. always learning being that the members only hunt deer there are they (the hunting club?) selling hog hunts to keep the hog numbers in check? Ive heard they compete with deer etc? Just wondering.

At least your kids hunt and shoot thats what im hoping for that they continue the family tradition of hunting when I no longer can!

Talk to ya later and heres a boar we caught recently that messed up one of our dogs pretty bad.

What an advantage a helicopter offers! For us ground-pounders, hogs ain't so easy to hunt. So Jealous, yet loved the video. Cliffy

My Remington .243 was meant to touch something at modest range, so I wouldn't have to fling myself in with knife in-hand. Major Moxy applies to those who can attack a vicious pig with knife-in-hand. I lack moxy, obviously, since I'm an old fart with limited strength. I find no embaressment from squeezing a trigger at 100 yards or so. If it can save my dog, I'll aim carefully. I can't keep up with my dog, so I will protect him to the best of my ability. His body armour can only do so much, on its own. I love my Bull Terrior, so I use 100 grain Grand Slams with a moxy charge of 44.4 grains of H4350. These loads seem as potent as my rifle can get, and as needed. A great scope in a 4.5-14x40mm Nikon Buckmaster aides my eye greatly. I try not to let my bull pup get more than 100 yards beyond my field of vision. At five years old, my "puppy" seems to know what he is doing. At sixty-seven years of age, my feet don't move as they used to. Cliffy

I lied slightly, since I don't currently have a dog, but if I did it would be a Pit Bull. I love those animals because they are naturally so sweet in disposition. Takes a rat-bastard to train them to be vicious. I may yet own another dog after my Bessie died from cancer. I met a five-year-old Bull Terrior at a pound two years ago, and regret deeply not making it my pal. I get too attached to watch a friend die, but I will someday involve myself again. Cliffy

Feral Hogs come in all sizes, so can a .223 Remington with 60 grain Nosler Partitions @ 2800 fps be a pig gun? The neck is a large target on a pig, so snapping the spinal column (center neck) should be possible and efficient within 100 yards. Thousand pound pigs are generally NOT WILD. A three hundred pounder is a large rarity. Most people eat hundred pounders or smaller. Study a PIG anatomy chart before hunting pigs of any size, because their anatomy is DIFFERENT than that of a deer. A kill shot on a 150 pound deer can cause a porker to run-off. Cliffy
