Feral Hogs: Exotic Game

Wild boars are not native to the USA, much as the Common Carp is not native to America. Carp have defeated our best attempts at its extermination, and so have Wild Piggies (HOGS) spread into forty states. Massive sounders of pigs may have peaked the interest of many hunters in the Deep South, but Michigan wild hogs are just beginning to take-over prime deer country. I've taken-out more than five hundred Carp with my bow and arrow rig since I was twelve. Talk about no noticeable dent! Since pigs tend to multiply rapidly, soon no short supply of Michigan Wild Hogs shall rule the North Woods. Hogs are the only varmints that taste good, unlike carp that taste terrible. Uncounted millions of hogs extend their range of farmland, wetland, and desireable wildlife destruction. Never pass on a good shot at a FERAL PIG. Cliffy

Its funny you should post this Cliff. A friend of mine and I were talking about this yesterday, both of us from Berrien County, MI, and if I am not mistaken you don't even need to have a license to take these pigs. I'm not sure on this matter but, I always have a small game license for varmint hunting anyways so it is no big deal. We also mentioned that we have not seen any around here as of yet. I hunt predominantly in Berrien and he hunts predominantly in Cass County. I think these would be just as fun to shoot as coyotes, probably would take some more knock down power than your average varmint gun would supply. I agree though, if I see one and I have a firearm at my disposal, its going down.

I think this is where the .450 bushmaster, .50 Beowolf and like cartridges in the ar-15 platform would shine. it would be a blast shooting those critters with that--then having a barbeque.

I agree a Bushmaster .450 would be ideal for hogs to 150 yards, but please don't discount the .243 Winchester (my Pig rifle) with 100 grain Nosler Partition bullets at 3100 fps to 300 yards when visibility offers such convenience. From .243 Winchester upward, Pig hunts are for everyone with proper bullets. In Michigan, the big bore should work wonders through dense thickets. Often, little visual time creates a major PLUS for .338 caliber and beyond regarding elusive PIGS. Just hit them FORWARD of the rear of the shoulder, since a pig's vitals are well-forward of a deer's vitals. Cliffy

Cliffy, here is an old carp recipe that will help make them more palatible. Stuff a skinned carp with "Horse Apples", bake the carp on an oak plank. When done, throw the carp away and eat the plank and, the "Horse Apples".

Hi Doc, yes, I tried eating the wooden plank, but until now have never heard of stuffing the carp with horse apples. Horse apples should improve the carpious flavor. Sounds like nuggets of wisdom. Cliffy

cliff,
i live down here in toledo where can i join the fun of shooting hogs i`m dying to try out an encore rifle in 500 s&w mag among other large bore toys

we have them here in southwest va. haven't got a chance to hunt them. everyone is hunting them with dogs.
how do you go about it anyway. and tips...PLEASE...

Robster, I believe feral hogs are by-passing Ohio, to find the rich farmfields of eastern Michigan. Sorry buddy. Cliffy

Robster, you know I'm just kidding. Ohio has plenty for hogs to eat, and they soon will. Invasive and impossible to exterminate, you'll soon be begged by your state government to hunt them down. Michigan has already begged its hunters to kill wild pigs on sight. Michigan's WILL is my WAY. A small game license is all that's required in Michigan. For Texas, it's already too late to ask hunters for assistance, since it is over-run with hogs. Texas ranchers currently ask for hunter fees for the "priviledge" to hunt wild pigs, but soon they'll beg for assistance from hunters to irraticate millions of feral hogs over-running their cattle land. Cliffy

Ranchers in FL, TX have a cash...

cow by leasing hunting rights, including hogs. (We pay $1,000 per person for our 6,500 acre lease and this fee is much higher closer to population centers.) This is not to say that some of them would not like to get rid of the hogs. They do plow the ground, just ask me and my neighbors about our plowed yards (in a populated area). Like deer they are very adaptable.

I'll try to hit the high spots on the topic. You can hunt them much like deer but listen you can hear them when they are laid up during the day. They love acorns and corn (spread by hand or feeder) but will eat just about anything. Early morning, late afternoons is best unless you can hunt at night. You may not want to eat the boars over a 100 pounds or so unless they have been cut, if they stink, you likely will not want to taste the meat. Dogs and traps can also be used.

There is much more but seems like this post is too long.

DaninFL..
go right ahead i'd love to hear on the subject i've not yet encounted any pigs as yet .. i move s.e. ct to the coast in nc .. wilmington area an i've heard n.w. of me there mite be a population of these critters
tell me more ... :) ;)

Rather than me taking up space...

here, Rich, Google feral hogs. You will get more information than you likely want, aggression, diseases, DNA, etc.

While I have never had problems with hogs being aggressive, it does happen. Seems in some areas, they are becoming more so. Science folks are looking into DNA links of razorbacks and feral hogs breeding and getting more aggressive. Kind of interesting to me.

Cliffy,
I know I`m thying to find a place to hunt day tripping ohio dnr is about useless when trying to find out where the larger populations of hogs are at.Was told to contact some farmers and see what thay have to say problem is why drive 3-4 hours one way just to talk.

down here in texas, feral hogs are perfect for range estimation and practice on moving targets. As far as eating-trap them, feed them out for a month then fire up the BBQ.(never over a 100lbs though)

as my intrest has grown in Hogs... i gor a surprize today a friend has told me some one in his group has dropped out to a planned hunt this month an i get of fill the spot ;;yippee kie aye;;... :) :) :)
i'm wondering if i should try a 155gr blistic tip bullet or not...?
i do have 165 soft point an 168 hollow pt.smk [.308win.] loaded.
i think i know what they'll do... but wonder about the 155's
any comments......

We have bunches of them down here in Texas. Killed a few around my house in the rural area of san antonio.
These hogs can be very nocturnal and hard to pattern. So I end up hunting them at night with solar lights at feeders. My gun of choice is a .22 hornet with red dot scope. I use a Mueller 4x16x50 sport dot which only covers a 1/2" at 100 yds, its a very tiny dot.
This Hornet prints 1" or better at a 100 yds.
Put it in the noggin or the neck and they drop everytime, never had one take a step afterwards. Its a little more fun with the smaller calibers and I dont like tracking hogs in the dark in this south texas brush. So it usually always a head shot.
heres a few pics.

Don't understand the removal of info bit, but thanks for the great photos of downed hogs none-the-less. .22 Hornet seems the "runt" of the litter, powerwise, regarding 100 pound wild porkers, yet since accuracy of bullet placement is paramount to sheer, wild, unbridled, often inaccurate, hard-bucking, flinch-creating horsepower, I'll buy the shown results. I'd also be hard-pressed to ignore the fabulous .243 Winchester with 100 grain Speer Grand Slam fare for feral pig hunting, since this bullet/caliber works for me. Preferring 60 pounders to 100 pound bruisers for the kettle, I leave the 200 pound boars for mating afield. Unless asked to cull a troublesome monster, I leave the huge Boars alone, yet a .243 Winchester full-boat load stops any BIG Piggie I've run across to date. Point-blank shots in the lower shoulder cut through shoulder scar-shield and into the vitals out to 200 yards. cliffy
