Feedback on this scope for my new 204 please

Just finished getting my new Remington 700 .204 restocked and bedded. Looking for glass for it now; intended use will be PD shooting and paper. This is a new venture for me so I'd appreciate insights. I was thinking $500 for my scope budget and was narrowing down into the 6-20 x 40 type scopes but I found a Nikon Monarch 6-24 x 50 for sale locally for $495, used twice at a range: http://www.opticsplanet.com/nikon-monarch-6-24x50sf-riflescopes.html

It has a Nikoplex reticle and includes external taller turrets I'm told. Assuming the scope is in good shape what do you think of the choice? Will I be happy with 6-24 with my 204? I see the scope for $579 new.

Thanks for the help!

I'm not up on the Nikon line, but I'm a huge fan of Leupold's Varmint Hunters reticle for prairie dogs. So if one of those models (Leupold) is out of your price range, I'd look into any scope with the BDC type reticles

cameraland (site) is selling vortex 6.5-20x44 vipers 65 moa turret with cap for $279.00 wide plex..just bought 2..normal price is 399.00..would be a great scope for your rig...Danny

I shoot a 204 at p-dogs and believe that the higher magnification is a must. Just my opinion but when the mirage gets heavy you can always back the power off. I also shoot a 20 ppc and both rifles wear 6.5-20x50 LR's by Leupold, VH reticles in both. I own plent of glass and for little critters at distances of 500+ good glass is a must. I personally think Nikon Monarch glass is great for the price. They may lack in FOV or internal elevation adjustment but they have great color fidelity and contrast. Learn to dial the turrets and you'll be deadly with a good load in your 204. If you ever get a chance the best way to shop for glass is look through as many as possible and see what best suits your eye.

I have a few Nikon Monarchs with towers...but for $680...

I would add $20 & get a Vortex PST 4-16x50 SFP 30mm tube..or

add $70 and step up to a Vortex PST 6-24x50 SFP 30mm tube...

The PST is a much better scope...buy once...cry once

Nikon recently introduced the new Monarch 3 line of scopes. I've seen some drastic price cuts advertised recently for the previous model line. In one case if I recall the scope was advertised for about 40% off or more. This was about a month ago so not sure if anyone is discounting them that much any more. About a year ago I paid $250 for a used 5-20X Monarch scope, so $495 seems a little high to me for a 6-24X model.

My Monarch scopes all have the Nikopex style duplex reticle. I like ballistic plex reticles, but never did like the Nikon version called the BDC cause they use circles and they are way too big for my needs and the lines are too thick. I know some people really like the Nikon version so it is a matter of personal taste.

You might try natchez shooters supply and click on their sales flyer on the right side of the page.

May want to consider the Weaver 6-20X40mm Grand Slam on sale at Natchez. In my opinion, a very nice Japanese made scope for the money.

+1 on this Weaver. To my old eyeballs, the glass looks more clear than my Leupold 6-20x40.

My experience with Nikon Monarch was so-so glass and non-repeatable adjustments. I have a Sightron SII Big Sky in 6-24x on one of my .204s; even though I prefer side focus, it's still one of my favorites and has about the most reliable controls of any scope I've owned.
fwiw, there's an SIII 6-24x50 SF posted in the classifieds here. A little over your budget, though.

Checkout the MidwayUSA exclusive Vortex 5-15x44mm...seasonal run......30mm tube. May be worth the wait and they run sales for $399 every now and then.

I have that same scope, 6X24X50mm but it has the BDC reticle.
yours for 375.00 all the turrets and Lifetime warranty. Nice scope
