I use PVC pipe for storage containers and no thin wall crap either!! A hunk of foam rubber in the tube, barrel added and more foam rubber at the top. If you shake it and the barrel moves, add more foam rubber. You won't be sorry later.Have used 1 1/2" PVC tube to ship barrels. Cut to length and glue one end cap on.
strapping tape on the other tight fitting cap.
This is exactly what I did when I shipped mine outIf YOU ever plan on shipping YOUR barrel, do it right!! Head to your local Wally World and pick up a couple of "pool noodles". $ store has them also.
Maybe $1.50 each. USPS sells a 4"' X 4" box 36" long. Slit the noodle and cover the barrel with a few inches left over on each end. Zip tie about 2" or 3" all along it's length. The end excess will act as a padding so the ends won't get damaged from bouncing around.
Shipped a few barrels to Oregon to get fluted with no problems with them coming back in the same box and padding.
Also shipped a few to NY to "my Man" () to get threaded and chamber with NO PROBLEMS.
Came back in the same boxes with no issues. Pack it GOOD and you'll have no issues!!
yes I agree this has very little chamferSomewhat OT, but I was taught and my students were taught to cut at least a thread depth chamfer on the end of any threads. That may have mitigated some of the damage to this barrel. It is fixable though.
The party that packaged the barrel is at fault. Pretty hard to blame the shipping co. It is a matter of common sense everyone who deals in barrels knows how easy it is forChamber
While true, a much larger sampling is done using X-Rays which leaves little/no evidence of Big Brother's actions. These carriers will open a lot of packages to see what is inside. USPS is the worst. They have "inspectors" that can, and will, open anything they want. What happens to it afterwards is not their problem.![]()
How do you figure they broke the stock?UPS has been rough lately. this month alone they cracked a stock that was wrapped in 3 layers of foam wrap, 3 layers of 1/4" bubble, and 3 layers of 1/2 bubble, additional 1/2 in wraps at the forearm, butt, and midsection, as well as 2" of peanuts around the entire thing. Cracked it right in half.
Then, they managed to handle a rifle with a Nanuk 996 - EXTREMELY ROBUST CASE, so rough that the bolt knob when out through the top lid.
ALWAYS INSURE....other small business gunsmiths that are doing this professionally as a serious source of income, get yourself UPS Capital insurance.
The most likely put it under something significantly heavier and it happened to hit in the middle of box, and flexed it. No amount of padding will stop a stock box on the floor if a heavy box rolls off their shelves and lands just right. damn shameHow do you figure they broke the stock?

UPS Capital is a private carrier insurance owned by UPS. They will cover all the packages you insure with a signature required. If something is damaged I have gotten checks from them in as little as 10 days. What is ups capital insurance?
The real problem is the people who shipped it . Tommy Mc. They should know that ups and usps dont give a DAMN ! ! ! !A little careful file work will clean that. Lucky you got the barrel!
Maybe send a “complaint” to whoever packed it.

If it was me I would just do a bigger chamfer on the end and not try chasing those threads as that's very difficultWell good ol FedEx slung my barrel out of the box lost the custom bolt face and lost the magazine and damaged the threads on the barrel. They shoved it back into the damaged tube and sent it to me like nothing ever happened. I have filed a claim and filled out an inspection report and submitted that. I already know its gonna be a drawn out thing and I will probably never get reimbursement for the damages and lost items. Could these threads be salvaged with a light clean up pass? that's the second recommendation on that approach, thanks might just do thatIf it was me I would just do a bigger chamfer on the end and not try chasing those threads as that's very difficult
I would suggest you simply sand a taper onto the last 1/8 inch of the barrel.
