FedEX Fumbles my barrel & damaged the threads

I know how I package my stuff when I ship it to my gunsmith your gunsmith should have done the same thing there should have been a plastic guard over those threads and then taped heavily. I know what to expect with UPS and FedEx That's why I put the blame on your gunsmith. You can never put too much tape on the ends of the box.

If the moving company packed the stuff then their insurance will pay to repair or replace the broken items. At least all the moving companies we’ve used in the past have
Yes, there is insurance. Unfortunately, one of the items that was broken was an authentic Japanese pill box that is over 100 years old. No way the insurance company is going to value that.

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. It is frustrating. I learned the hard way when a seller shipped a vintage custom Sako in an oversized single thick card board box with no filler. Bull barrel punched multiple holes through bottom of box and was dragged across concrete and steel everywhere… Rosewood nose cap and palm cap were snapped off.. Beat up.

I now confirm with seller how firearm will be packed or I buy gun case on Amazon and have it delivered to seller to use. This way seller gets a hard case that also comes shipped inside a plain brown outer cardboard box.

When I shipped my 527 to pac nor for new barrel fear of it getting damaged was high. I bought a pool noodle and slit it down one side where I slid the action and barrel in it. I think took a smaller piece of noodle and protected the trigger assembly. I then put it on a box filled with enough packing material to not have any play in it.
When they shipped it back they did it the same way and arrived perfect.

As to the OP, I'm also with the camp that says the barrel wasn't properly packaged by the sender.

The biggest part you have to protect against is movement inside the box. Let's be honest, it's a giant heavy piece of steel. You don't really need to worry too much about breakage. It's all about having it not move within the box when it's tossed/dropped.

When I pack barrels or barreled actions, I mostly focus on adding protection to the ends. And then in the box, I double up on foam on the ends.

I do like the pool noodle idea. I also tend to put them in tubes and then the tubes in to rectangular boxes. Round tubes roll too much and conveyor belt systems hate tubes.

Hopefully, you've already reached out to who the sender was and they are willing to work with you on this.

Well good ol FedEx slung my barrel out of the box lost the custom bolt face and lost the magazine and damaged the threads on the barrel. They shoved it back into the damaged tube and sent it to me like nothing ever happened. I have filed a claim and filled out an inspection report and submitted that. I already know its gonna be a drawn out thing and I will probably never get reimbursement for the damages and lost items. Could these threads be salvaged with a light clean up pass? The incompetence of the shipping industry is deplorable. Most people no longer take pride in doing a good job, it's just a paycheck to them. Ever since the "plandemic" service in every sphere has deteriorated.

If YOU ever plan on shipping YOUR barrel, do it right!! Head to your local Wally World and pick up a couple of "pool noodles". $ store has them also.
Maybe $1.50 each. USPS sells a 4"' X 4" box 36" long. Slit the noodle and cover the barrel with a few inches left over on each end. Zip tie about 2" or 3" all along it's length. The end excess will act as a padding so the ends won't get damaged from bouncing around.
Shipped a few barrels to Oregon to get fluted with no problems with them coming back in the same box and padding.
Also shipped a few to NY to "my Man" ( ) to get threaded and chamber with NO PROBLEMS.
Came back in the same boxes with no issues. Pack it GOOD and you'll have no issues!!

Have used 1 1/2" PVC tube to ship barrels. Cut to length and glue one end cap on.
strapping tape on the other tight fitting cap.
Yes. I’ve done this. Tennis ball on each end. Thought it was a great idea.
However like many ‘great’ ideas I’ve had, not as good as I thought. It was pointed out that in doing this the pvc tube is round and therefore can ROLL to hidden corner in the truck or roll to a hidden part of the warehouse.
Consequently the triangular box solves that problem. But does nothing if an Olympic javelin thrower decides to launch the box.

Lots of great information on this thread in response to my barrel damage thank you all for your post and comments, I hope members will take note and better prepare shipments for transport. Lots could have been done but we sometimes just take for granted that we are good with what we are already doing. I can't change anything by harping on what is done, only relieved that I can salvage my barrel. The shipping individual in my case is a very nice person and very easy to communicate with and my issue seems that it will be resolved easily. As for the Claim I filed I don't expect much from FedEx but they need to also do better at their jobs so we don't have to overkill on our end. Even though there was damage, they still LOST 2 important components as well. I need to locate a bolt face for my Savage for a 17 hornet and as for the magazine that was just a project that probably wasn't going to work out anyway so I will just set it up as a single shot with a follower. I need to focus now on locating the right thread file to use on this barrel to clean it up, for Savage small shank. Mush appreciated all information shared!

Both of my thread files have 8 thread pitches on them.

I’d file a claim. My parents recently moved and had some antiques that got damaged. Insurance sent someone to appraise the value and cut a check. They actually came close to the value
Insurance claims have been filed. My daughter is an executive-level employee who has been told the company will cover everything. But money won't cover the loss of the pill box.

I have even been known to use a thin wire that runs on the outside of the box. The wire cinches the item to the wall of the box. A couple of layers of tape on the wire and you can't hardly see it.

I guess things have changed. When I worked for the USPS, the Dead Letter Division employees were the only ones allowed to open letters/packages.
My wife worked in state LE for a time as an investigator and would often have to work with a postal law enforcement agent and according to him, they CANNOT open a package. In fact, when suspected illegal material was in a package they would have to do stakeouts waiting for the recipient to open the package themselves before they had a case against them. Having an unopened package addressed to you with an illegal item in it was not a crime. Once it was opened, it became the can of worms.
