Federal Cart. Primer Pocket Question

Re:Primer Pocket Question More Confussion

ok...just did a test on Lapua 223(Gold Box) and it measured .170-.172"...actually smaller than the FC carts. at .175"

what gives..how come the lapua primer pockets hold up but the federal hasnt...will these federal cases be ok to shoot if i just get a larger diameter primer like the russian primers preacher was talking about...i think im more confussed now than earlier.

or does the lapua hold up better because the brass is harder?

I got lucky one Monday on my day off before I retired and went to the range when the local police and swat teams were practicing with their AR15 rifles. I came home with three five gallon buckets of once fired .223/5.56 brass. The mix was about the same amount of Remington, Federal and Lake City.

You will hear people say the brass is too soft and this is the number one rumor on the internet. I wonder how many people saying this have a rockwell hardness tester at home. The moderator in the reloading forum at AR15.com is smart, knows a lot about reloading and isn't the shade tree bubba type.

Your asking questions about brass hardness and web thickness at the flash hole and which is causing the primer pocket problem. My best guess is both because it is .223 cartridge brass and it doesn't have to be as hard as mil-spec 5.56 military brass. Add this to being fired in military type chambers with a .002 larger chamber diameter and .004 longer headspace and its anyone's guess.

No one is complaining about Lupua or any other brand of brass other than Federal. When I started loading and checking my Federal brass, I was having a failure rate of over 50% with loose primer pockets. I'm also loading for my sons AR15 rifle so the Federal brass was put back in the five gallon bucket and is now gathering dust in the basement. I'm not going to have a son mad at me for high temp gas leakage on his new AR15 bolt face. To be truthful I have so much other "good" brass it isn't worth messing with the Federal brass I do have.

In your posting above you gave measurements for Lupua brass so I have a question for you.

If you have Lupua brass "WHY" are you messing around with the lowest quality .223 brass on the planet?

im trying to build loads for hog hunting. where i will not be picking the brass up...it will be fast action shooting and leave it lay...i keep my lapua for my bolt guns...i was looking for some brass that would be suitable for my AR that i wouldnt hate to loose

as stated by everyone else...
Russian, CCI #41, BR4 might buy you another firing or two. but If you are going to leave them lat on a hog hunt they only gotta stay in once!
cheers,
Doc

It just comes down to the fact that not all brass is the same. Federal makes their brass one way and it works for them and Lapua has a different recipe and it also works for them.

I just went thru pages and pages and pages of info concerning Federal Brass....hate to say it but my eyes hurt so bad all i can see is the scrap yard in my vision for this brass...too bad i lost some money on the deal but at least i didn't loose a bolt to it...For me and my uses...I'm going to scrap it...I just don't have time to be doing all this measuring and testing just to figure out if it will work or not...I want to load....and go shoot...simple as that...not trying to reinvent the wheel..

The person who posted the photo below said he would keep reloading his Federal brass because he could get a new bolt for less than $50.00

This is the same mindset of the people you see on YouTube shooting their AR till the barrel is smoking and the handguard is too hot to hold on to.

Now that I know you have an AR15 be aware that the majority of AR15s are over gassed and the bolt can move to the rear while there is still pressure in the barrel. If you have loose primer pockets the residual chamber pressure can pop the primer out of the primer pocket and jam the trigger group.

So just remember this and your Federal brass, if your first shot doesn't put the hog down and your AR15 jams you may have a very pissed off pig and need to climb a tree in a hurry.

I'm glad you changed your mind, when I lived in Texas we would hunt wild pigs (Piccary) with a pistol. You planted your backside against a scrub oak tree on a game trail and waited for the pigs. When you saw them you emptied your pistol and while the last piece of brass was still in the air you got your backside up the tree fast. Before this I never knew pigs could stay mad that long or how small a scrub oak tree really is.

You can still use the Federal brass to hunt pigs if you have a backup like the Glock 20SF, in 10mm Auto and 15 round mags.

lol very true...i now have half of a 5 gallon bucket full of "Pederal"...that some one else pedaled off on me...off to the scrap yard in a couple days..

the new Wikipedia

Pederal: An inherently poor made brass that you pedal off on some unsuspecting customer for your profit.

LOL...I gotta find humor in this somewhere

Peccary are not pigs. it is my impression that the op is referring to feral hogs. A difference of night and day.

Your Bio tells me your from Texas and I'm not a native Texican so I'm allowed to say this..........................

The Battle of the Alamo is where eight drunk Mexicans whooped all those stupid Texicans.

"A peccary is a medium-sized mammal of the family Tayassuidae, or New World pigs. Peccaries are members of the artiodactyl suborder Suina, as are the pig family and possibly the hippopotamus family. The species is also known as the musk hog, Mexican hog. and javelina."

And when your stuck in a small scrub oak tree and out of ammo, with 30 of these little mean "PIGS" trying to dig up the tree, it makes you wish you brought more ammo.

P.S. Do you know how to bury a six foot Texican?
You beat the shit out of him and put him in a match box.

Just because they are in the same broad family as the hog and the hippo doesn't make them a pig.

Definition of Swine
Any of various omnivorous, even-toed ungulates of the family Suidae, including pigs, hogs, and boars, having a stout body with thick skin, a short neck, and a movable snout.

For sure they don't taste like pork. No bacon there. Call 'em what you want. You're the only one I've ever heard of that thought they were pigs.

If we read the OP oridginal postings we are making a "Federal" case out of this.............

It just shows you you can't make a silk purse from a sows ear. ;)
