Fclass in Memphis

How are the Fclass matches in Memphis?

How many shooters will typically be there ?
Round count ?

Thanks Corey

Lots of Fair weather shooters there. if its not 100* plus like the last few weeks or raining or to cold they will pull about 10 to 15 shooters. Now the big match this Fall on the 26th Oct for the mid range statechampionship will draw between 40 to 60 shooters. Weather is typically Awsome that week and the range holds over 60 National Records as its pretty easy to shoot on.If you want to hold a National Record this is the place to do it.

Hope that helps.

Ha wold love to hold a national record but I don't think I could set one if I was shooting in a tunnel. But if they gave away a prize for having the
most fun I would almost always win. Looking forward to Oct match !

I think, the last two monthly matches that I have been to have had over 20 shooters. I enjoy shooting there. I won't be able to make the August match, but I hope to return for September!

The guys at MSSA are a great bunch to shoot with. There is a lot of fun had by all. I can't speak as to the difficulty of the range, as compared to other places, as I have only shot at Memphis and Little Rock. Having said that the range is challenging to me and there are some very good shooters who compete there. The round count is typically 3 strings of 20 shots or 60 shots for record, not including sighters.

And, I wouldn't count on a national record because the NRA still hasn't posted the records set there last October.

I also would agree that the folks at MSSA are a great group of people. I have shot both 600 yd Benchrest match as well as a 600 yd F-Class match there. The benchrest match had a ton of people in excess of 50 shooters I would think. The F-Class match I attended had a very good turnout as well not 50 but maybe 25 or so shooters.

These folks did what a lot of ranges should do, and that was make you feel like it was your home range. And trust me the opposite of that is the case sometimes.

I can tell you it is a serious problem. Despite several phone calls and many emails the NRA just cant get there act together. There are national records set right at Camp Perry at the National Championships that the NRA runs that have not been updated for maybe 8 years!!!! How messed up is that. Last time I talked to Doug about this he said he called and was refered to Mr Tuggle and that he would personally take care of it..... ya not so much. The bad part is the Match director looks like the bad guy. Dispite all the hard work that goes into runing a match and all the paper work and range prep and ordering, the NRA makes that guy look like an ass when they do these types of things.
I hear from other clubs that have the same issues so its not just us. Its all over the Country.

It is weird because there have been national records posted since October but not those from the match. I personally called them several months ago and was told that it was probably a paperwork issue. The lady pulled the records and said, no, everything was marked that the records could be recorded but almost a year later, they still have not. She couldn't explain why other records had been recorded, but TN St Champs had not. Go figure.

There have been several national records shot there. However, take a look at who shot them and then take a look at their other accomplishments. Most of them have shot within 1 point of that at other locations and hold several state titles.

Hi Folks, new guy here. Want to pass on the info I have on the NRA.
The big problem at the NRA office is lack of help.
This past June I was shooting the Hunter Pistol Nat. in PA and met the lady(Lois I think) who is responsible for the High Power and Silhouette records (along with all the daily and weekly duties).
We chatted for a short time about F class(I'm new to this game) and I mentioned that I had read several places on the net about National records being slow to get recorded.
She said the main problem was "SHE" was the only person in the office doing the records for both. She was also the only secratary for the guy ??? in charge of High Power rifle and Mr Conner in Silhouette dept. There are a few others in the office, Johnathan L. , Mrs Chin, etc, but they had more than they could do to keep up with the day to day stuff.
I know Silhouette is a dying game, but there is still a lot of clubs shooting weekly matches. Now you folks know the number of F Class, Prone, High Power, etc., matches going around the country every weekend.
She said the piles of targets around the office waiting to be scored were everywhere. The floor, the cabinets, desk, even in the hall.
She also said one of the big problems was the forms the match directors had to fill out, more often than not, were not filled out correctly, there fore they had to go back to them for completition or couldn't be certified at all.
She said there was a ton that are just waiting with all the paperwork done correctly, just getting to it was the problem. She spend a lot of time in the summer at Perry and Whitington and most of the winter working on the next years schedules and making the record books the silhouette shooters use. If someone calls or one of the bosses holler, she stops and digs till she finds the target/match requested, checks everything out and then process as needed. Then someone else would holler about some schedule, etc and off she would go in another direction. She said she has been asking for help for years.
She is a retired manager from a huge Corp. She works there to keep herself busy(definatly not the money) and said she enjoys her work.
I know all the above is here say, but it is what I was told directly by her face to face.
I think we need to be calling someone further up the chain to try to get more help in that dept.

Back on topic, Memphis sound like a likely destination in my near future.

Welcome to the board.
As the former Match Director of the MSSA prone matches I can tell you this. I have sent in over 60 National Record forms to the NRA. The first ones I sent in I confirmed with the staff prior to sending them in so Im certain they where done correctly. And im not sure about the other discaplines but we dont send in targets to get scored. They are confirmed at the range, the paper work filled out and sent in. So im not sure what type of shooting requires sending in targets.
Their work load is overwelming is without a doubt the issue. I have no doubt in this. Dennise Willing would be the guy to call as he is in Charge of the competition department now.
These people need more help.. period. Even if its a summer temp. Im sure they would be capable of getting the printing done while the staff works on there other duties.
Hope to have you over. Every year the range at memphis keeps getting better. We have spent a boat load of money to make it the premier shooting range it is.

Well, in an age where it seems "charity" organizations spend all the donations on executives and employees, it's nice to see that, maybe, the NRA doesn't "waste" money on employees. Although, I would like to see these things get done faster.

Memphis is a great place to shoot! I don't think you'll find target carriers that are easier to work anywhere in the country!

One thing is for sure, they don't spend a lot of money on saleries of the "worker bees".
I'm sure the executives are not hurting, but the lowly dept mgrs and down, are either there because they like there job or are looking for a better one.
Mr Conner(75yo Ret. Marine) told me a few years ago that everytime they get someone trained and they are a good worker, someone further up the chain takes them.
I'm sure, like everywhere in the business world, there are those that work and those that just do enough to get by.
I'm just passing on what I have been told first hand.

Sorry about hijacking this thread....

Hopefully I can make it up to Memphis soon. Where can I find more info on the club and the F class matches.

Thanks

They have a website. Search for Memphis Sport Shooting Association. Or, post any questions you have here. Several shooters there, including the prone match director, are members here.

Send me an email Via this web site and Ill send you the schedule of the matches that remain for this year and get you on the mailing list of results and announcments.

If there is one huge down fall to the Club its there Damn web page... I think it sucks and have brought it up many many times... Like everything else its a non paying position so it stays like it is.

Be glad to have you up.
