Faxon Firearms R700 Action

I had first thought so also, but look at the custom rem 700 clone market. There are many 2 lug clones that shoot just fine. I don't think lugs in themselves tell the whole story.

I had originally thought that about Weatherby, that if Weatherby had done it it must have had data to back it up, But why are they chasing the 2 lug market, even with action mount, trigger, rails? This is why I mentioned the 307, at $750 it seems a decent option possibly as you gain a plethora of rem 700 accessories, several trigger options as well that is manufactured by a company with a track record. You gain the same thing with the Faxon.

The guys at Faxon are responsive and quick to adapt, that is worth something in itself. They also started listing barrel blanks so that gunsmiths can adopt their 8.6 blackout barrels, and that is something that I had asked them about several weeks ago. So far I like their barrels, not adverse to looking at their actions, but most of my premise is that I want to build my own action and for better or worse the blanks AND bolts are 2 lug. If I just can't wait and resort to buying a bolt action, I would consider the Faxon.
Obviously Faxon has identified a segment in the market regarding bolt actions. I know that their engineers have done their homework.

Regardless, only time will tell if their 1st bolt action will succeed or not.

Totally agree. I remember reading an article some years ago about safari shooters in Africa. The story goes that Americans turn up with large Wetherbys, which, due to the heat, overpressure and fail to extract.. They were also considered too noisy - not the discharge, but the "ping" of a round coming out of the mag, attracting the game's attention.

But I do wonder whether, with today's CNC machining, that 6 or 9 lugs couldn't be made to work?
Remington can't even get 2 lugs to make contact. Last one I bought for a build was billed as a stainless non-repeater "target" action. It was making 5% contact on one of the lugs. The other lug was making zero contact. 3 lugs would be my limit and that would be for a 60 degree bolt lift. Preferably from a company like BAT who actually knows how to make quality actions.

That said, I did buy a Solus action which seems to work quite well.

I am a little disappointed that the action is in 416R. 416R is the worst steel foisted upon the shooting world as if it is something special and it is at best a dumpster fire steel designed to look good and be easy to machine but not actual be a good steel. It is right up there with 420 steel for a knifes blade. People gobble it up but it is the high water mark for ignorance in steel. He said 416 but most people leave the R off for some reason when talking.

Nothing costing near $1000 in a custom action should be made from 416R. Paying a premium for a barrel made out of 416R is also a fools folly that most are happy to plop down money for! Not that 4140 and 4150 are great steels either they are old and outdated. Winchester was using high Nickle steel in the 1800's and so was Mauser but not today. In 2023 the use of 4100 series steels and any form of resulphurized SS should be criminal especially in a custom action!

How much surface area lock up engagement for those six locking lugs do they guarantee? I am guessing none?

Weatherby did his 9 lug interrupted thread like design what 60+ years ago that reminds one of a artillery piece. Winchester did their coned breech 2 lug well over 60 years ago. So this is not earth shattering or even anything new it is well trodden ground! Plenty of 3 lug, 3 lug coned, 3 lug trapezoidal, camed lugs, camed ball bearings locking into barrel like a SMidt Ruben, AR like bolts on bolt guns.

If I am paying for a custom action everyone of those lugs had better have 85% engagement out of the box or they are stealing from me and selling junk. No custom action should need receiver blueprinting or bolt blue printing or trimming correction or even lapping of the lugs. It should come out of the box absolutely perfect with ZERO room for improvement!

You should her real engineers talk about the J58 engine design for the SR71 you would think they where they the worlds best sales men talking about their J58 engine. I have had better vacuum cleaner sales men come to my house than this guy from Faxon. He had a captive audience that wants to be sold and he did a typical terrible gun industry pitch. No passion and no product knowledge.

If a company can not design an affordable quality trigger and include with their action I question their ability to design and manufacture the action and barrels. I am guessing you do not even get a world class trigger with this. You probably have to drop another $500 for a trigger!

What we want to know is if the design solves the problems found in older designs like the Mauser, Remington and Defiance actions from a geometry, alignment, timing, camming stand point in terms of competition actioned designed to produce very consistent ignition, low bolt force for cycling and repeat alignment of all parts and ammunition. They do not tell us any of this. Not to pick on Faxon since none of the custom action makers tell us why we should purchase their premium custom action outside of some really stupid talking points that do nothing to convince me to purchase their action. It is like someone asking why they should purchase a Ferrari and them saying "You should buy it because it is a a Ferrari!". You should by it because it is made out 416R and has 6 locking lugs and has the foot print of a Remington 700 and DLC coating and built in Pic rail! All that is missing is some chewing gum and a valley girl accent and some repetitive verbal pauses!

All of you young guys learn to do an elevator pitch! Be prepared to sell what it is you can do that other can not in a brief 60 second explanation even better!

All of the so called premium action makers you will typically see on a sight like but not limited to Snipers Hide do a terrible job convincing me they are doing anything of significance besides making a profit! If you take away the cheerleaders that offer nothing of substance just interviews and marketing garbage there is no substance behind the claims. They have not produced results that stand out from what has been previously done with mass produced factory actions. Being used by the top guys in PRS for instance does not mean anything on it's own. That is like claiming that Hanes makes the best underwear because most men wear Hanes! Better yet Camel filterless are the best cigarettes' because 7 out of 10 doctors smoke them! It's utter nonsense and is so subjective as to be comical. Machines and the performance of a machine is something that is totally and completely measurable. If you can not measure it than it is not science and is not engineering and is not precision machining!

If 416R is such a great material than why did they not make the bolt from it?

So Faxon if I purchase your action will Speedy be able to improve on the bolt design if so why aren't you doing better? If I send the action the Gre-Tan will his shop find ways to improve on it? If so why should I purchase your action? If I send it to Gordy will he be able to improve on it? Again if Gordy can why improve on it why should I even bother purchasing your action? If the answer is no and truly no than why aren't you explaining all of that with facts, measurements, data up front???

I am sure I am not the only person on this site that would have liked a video that had some meat on the bone instead of a CNN style talking points video!

Imagine this was the release engineer for the latest Chevrolet Corvette or Toyota Tacoma or Airbus A350-900 and getting content like this! It would go over like a fart in church! He would be the laughing stalk of the industry. Any release engineer worth his salt would be able to tell you every single design element and it's value to the consumer on demand!

The most important thing I want to know is what will this do for me that a Pawn Shop Remington 700 sent off to Gre-Tan will not already do? What will this do that a Ruger American action rebarreled will not do? Why should I give you my money over all the other custom actions?
