favourite 7mm bullet for larger stuff?

I was never a believer in shooting elk in shoulders due to the bullet construction I was using. It is rumored(not by me) that the 175g Sierra shoots holes through elk shoulders. I shoot the Nosler 175g LRAB now, and it penetrates like a mack truck on quartering shots with large hogs.

168gr Nosler LRABs have worked well for me on elk from 7mm Rem Mag and 280 AI. 160gr to 168gr is enough.

My buddy and I tried failsafes years ago when they first came out. The design looked very good and you would expect deep penetration. We loaded some 180s in a 300mag for an elk hunt and the penetration was disappointing. Almost every bullet was recovered after failure to exit. It had a large mushroom with the pedals failing to turn back presenting too large a frontal area. In addition they weren't that accurate and were expensive. The design didn't last long on the market.
Interesting. Guess there always will be reviews going both ways with any bullet product. Guys over the africa board seemed to like them, saying they dont open on light skin game and are a heavy game bullet only

Even shooting times reviewed them and had good things to say

I have heard that Woodleigh is not in business anymore.
That's possible I guess. I have a supply of them from years back and I haven't checked in a while. It's too bad if they are done, The Weld Cores are superb bullets.

Thank you for that excellent link. Most shooters had very positive results but I did not.
I expected deep penstration and did not get it. Maybe mine was a bad batch of jacket material or something like that.
Seems like there is always some exception to the rule when using a newly introduced bullet.

Speer Grand Slam may be an option. 7mm 175 Grand Slams are available directly from Speer for $27 per 50

What makes the Grand Slam good for larger game? I am building a 280 AI and the available bullets I can find are Hornady CX & ELD-X, Barnes TTSX, Nosler BTs, and Speer Hot Cor and Grand Slams.

Accubonds and Partitions - not available anywhere.

@wolfman,
Since you already have the 160gr Accubond, i'd stick with those over the other bullets you have listed.
Especially if you've shot them before & they are accurate in your rifle.

Post up on your hunt!
I have the 160 ABs on the shelf, but haven't don't have a load worked up. To be perfectly honest, I'm suffering from chronic rifle looney syndrome, trying to come up with the perfect load, when the 120tsx at 3350 load I've been shooting on deer for years would do the job just fine.

I've used the Berger 180 Hybrid out of a 284 Shehane on about 30 animals in South Africa including several wildebeest, kudu, and sable. Everything bang flopped. Deer and elk here in USA too.

At what ranges were those shots taken?

As Wboggs stated, jacket separation with the 7mm 175 Sierras was an issue for me also...that is why I went to Nosler partitions years ago.

I dont have experience with the specific bullets you mentioned but for your moose hunt I would look hrd for 175 partitions or a-frames. If you cant find the partitions or a frames I would definitely find something heavy 175s or so. Ill put it this way: by adding weight to the bullet you are less dependent on the bullet design, you are increasing penetration the easy, simple way. Of the bullets you listed I would probably start with the 175eldx just because of weight.

At what ranges were those shots taken?
The ranges varied from about 250 to 400 yards. Four kudu bulls, all between 325 and 375 yards away, all dropped at the shot. Gemsbok at 340 yards. Three Blue Wildebeest were from 250 to 350 yards. Elk was close, less than 100 yards away. We shot a great variety of plains game; impala, springbok, blesbok, duiker, hartebeest at ranges from about 250 to 400 yards away as well.

Relating to moose, I shot a 60" bull moose in Alaska several years ago with my 6.5-284 at about 250 yards. First two shots were 140gr Nosler Partitions into the lungs, broadside. Third shot was a 140gr VLD with the moose facing me. Bullet went into front of check, and the moose dropped (bullet hit the spine). My buddy outfits in Alaska for moose and sheep, and many clients use his 7mm Mag, which he uses 168gr VLD in. His experience is moose rarely drop unless it is spine shot, just put a bullet in the lungs and 30-60 seconds later, they will tip over, usually without taking more than a few steps.

I've shot a few good bulls over the years. My advice - bring plenty of gun. Heavy bullets always seem appropriate for 1,000lb animals. The last Maine bull I killed took two 400gr bullets to center mass before he dropped. LOL

However, guides tell me that most clients shoot .308/30-06 and take shots under 150yds.

Grand Slams were designed for game with heavy hides/bone. They have a flat base and are very easy to develop loads with. The soft point is small and has little exposure. My experience(7mm) is the 175's will shoot thru elk.

I ran out of time leading up to the hunt, so ended up grabbing the 120tsx load that I’ve been using on whitetails. We found a small bull, broadside at 70 yds. One bullet through the lungs, and he took two steps and tipped over. I guess I needn’t have worried!
