Favorite Target Style - Load Development

10 mph wind?

Not trying to sound smug, but do you know how much a 10 mph wind can move a bullet.?

Just my opinion as a Benchrest Shooter, any load development with a Rifle that has the potential to shoot 1/2 MOA or better is a waste of time without some type of flags to let you know what the conditions are.

A ribbon tied to a stick is better than nothing.

Shoot 3 round groups instead of 5.
This will show you more information covering 5 seating depths versus 3.
If the 1st 2 shots st a given depth ain't touching no sense in shooting the 3rd because it ain't gonna get any better.
This concept saves components no doubt. I leave the tuner/brake on zero until this is done and I find it gives all the info I need to work up a load. This home-made target with 1/4 inch dots work well if you have enough power.

Maybe it's just me or my way of thinking, but I always find the bullet weight the gun likes (140 gr in my case) then go for the node of the barrel with different powder weights (.2 gr at a time), then go for the jump.

I could be wrong but is seems to work for me.

Also this one if you have less than a 14x scope:

I shoot charge weight 1st, this target was shot at 100yards 3 shots per charge 123gr Amax set at touch. Pure shit house luck on the 45gr charge of RL19. I'm looking for horizontal poi, 45.3 measured @.22" C.T.C. 45gr was .098", I chose the 45gr to compensate for temp increases knowing ill have a lil wiggle room, and any increase in charge weight would be compressed leaving no room for seating any deeper in case. This load shot .5" group @300 yesterday and under 2" @ 600.View attachment 1327688
Normally after determining charge weight I'll run seating depth test off charge weight test.
3 shots per target in same format moving bullet deeper in .003 increments. You can see how seating depth tune repeats itself. I loaded on front side 2.2460 on this particular load.View attachment 1327696
6.5 creedmoor?

Personally I would have loaded 1 charge weight, not 2.
Charge can be re-evaluated after seating node is confirmed.
These are at 500 yards, first group was before my stock was painted and second group was after Brett painted my stock. My new load development process is to have my stock painted, saves components, I call it painting node, lol

We haven't had much of a break in wind for a few weeks, and I assume it'll stay about the same for awhile. Pretty rare lately to have a day without at least 10mph wind. Here's my 10-day forcast. I've got a 600 yard steel shoot coming up on April 9th, so I figure ANY load development is going to be better than NO load development.

Shoot your test at 100 with flags, so you not getting a weather report by shooting at 300

That’s what confidence in your equipment can do.
