Favorite powder/primer for lightweight bullets in 6BR

I have several 1-12 twist 6BR barrels with a .060 throat. A while back I tried, (on a whim), some Accurate 2495 with Bart’s 80’s and 65grn BT’s. It turned out to be an excellent choice.

33.5 grns behind the 80’s yields right at 3300 FPS out of a 26 inch long barrel. 34.5 grns behind the 65 yields 3480 FPS out of the same barrel. I use Federal 205 primers.

Accuracy is very good. The 2495 also burns very clean, much like N135.

As a side note, both the .080 and .065 like to be jumped around .020. Find the finest of marks then move it in .005 at a time until you find the sweet spot.

I tried the 70 gr. Blitzking in my PPC and left my seater the same as I load Barts 68 bt. with same load of LT 30 and they shot a hole just a tad bigger than the 68's. The high BC. maybe worth it at 300 yds..... jim

I did a lot of testing with the 6br in zero freebore.

Lots of powders shoot great. Lt32 at 29 to 30 was outstanding with cci450. Ar comp is always outstanding also. We even tested surplus H335 and it shot great too.

I use 58 Grain V-Max out of mine. 1-14" Select Match Grade Shillen finished at 27". I too have my own reamer with a .271 neck and zero freebore as well. I built this rifle for Kangaroo culling and it does a great job. The powder I use and found the best is ADI 2219 which is an Australian powder designed for 5.56 ammo. I'm not sure if it's sold in the USA or if it is what it's called there, I know quite a few Australian powders are rebadged and sold on the US market. CCI BR primers and I get 3750 fps.

While i'm waiting on the 12 twist barrels I have been playing with my 6 BR in 8 twist with a factory 30 inch barrel. To my surprise I can get 60gr Sierra "Varminter" bullets to the lands and those little buggers are shooting awesome out of the 8 twist. I'm jumping them .015 and loading them over 32.3gr of H4895 and shot a .375 3 shot group at 300yds. last thursday. I going to make up some more and see if it holds up. Have also been playing with Berger 88gr high BC flat base bullets but having weird issues with finding a seating depth on them? Tried Berger's test and it appears that they grouped the best at .110 off the lands! Everybody says jam them but those actually shot the worst groups?

Try some 90gr berger bt's from that 8 twist. They shoot very well and tune easily.

A Hart 24" - 14twist - 0 freebore, 55 Blitzking / Ballistic tip or 58Vmax, and 2230 is the magic powder. Very accurate, the real deal on pd's. Haven't tried any other powder in that gun. The 60 Sierra HP is extremely accurate in a BRX and would also be a good one in the 6BR.

Not wanting to try any boat tail bullets in this rifle. Strictly wanting flat base for short range work and I'm having awesome results with...
Sierra "Varminter" flat base 60gr
Berger Target flat base 68gr
Berger Varmint flat base 80gr
Best powders so far have been H4895, Varget and H335 (looking to try VV N135)
Currently waiting on some custom 12 twist barrel being made with 0 freebore for the 55gr and 60gr bullets. Also having a standard freebore barrel made in 12 twist for the 80gr and 88gr bullets.

Ok.
8208 has been very good for me with the 80's. I haven't seen any down side of a 12 twist vs a 14. Maybe I just can't shoot the difference but it's not apparent to me. I believe the logic of using the slowest twist possible is to minimize the affect of bullet inconsistencies. The down side to that is you leave some bc on the table. A little faster twist will yield a bit better bc from the same bullet. The trick, IMO, is figuring out which is of most significance. So, even with lighter bullets, I can't see a difference on target and I have the ability to step up to the 80's if it's throated so that I can use either/or.. I'm not changing.

I agree and for the last 3 years or better I have been fighting my 6 BR's trying to get "long range" (103gr or better) to shoot at short range and group tiny with no success to brag about. I even spoke with the people at Sierra and even they said those are not the best option because the 107gr match king dont "lay flat" until about 300 yards. I have been told both ways but from what I have been shooting here lately I'm starting to believe them. Just recently I shot my best group ever at 300 yards, a .375 with Sierra's 60gr Varminter flat base out of my 30 inch 8 twist. Going tomorrow to see if I can back it up with more that 3 shots. I'm having a blast shooting them light weights at blistering speeds and so far they seem consistent.

Try 108 Bergers with N140 (preferred) or Varget. they shoot excellent at 100 yds. not quite as good as the 80 Bergers (FB), but still excellent out of my 1 in 8 twist barrels i have used

Well yesterday in the rain the load does hold up and best of all it's consistent. I tried the 32.3gr and the 32.5gr and the 32.3 seems to bet the most accurate putting 4 in one hole and pretty sure I threw the last one out but even then it was under 1 inch. Shot two groups of 5 and both was about the same and damn good for pouring rain and swirling winds. The 32.5 load was dead nuts at 3600fps but it opened up just a tad so it may need more testing when it's not raining.
I just ordered some Berger "column" bullets this morning to give them a try as right now the 60gr Sierra's are tough to find.
