Favorite powder/primer for lightweight bullets in 6BR

Just getting ideas for what I'm going to need to try for my new barrels when they arrive. Looking to shoot 55gr to 70gr only and for accurate target work out to 300 yards.

I'm shooting Berger Columns over 31gns of Varget. Right around 3100 fps, holds largely better than a quarter inch with occasional forays into the sub-tenth inch at 100 yds (the only range I can shoot at without a fairly long drive.) Bat B/Krieger 13.5 twist.

I should add that this barrel has on the high side of 4000 rounds now; I think it's time to send it on a vacation to the smith to have the new barrel put on. Starting to open the groups up a bit (either that, or I'm not shooting as well as I was before.)

For what you described, here are 3 bullets that I have had best luck with.

Sierra's 60 gr. Hollow Point
Sierra's 70 gr. B.T. - H.P. Match
Speer's 75 gr. Hollow Point

The only powder I use is H-322.

For primers, I'll use either Federal Gold Medal Match or Remington 7 1/2.

All of my 6mm B-R "varmint" chambers for have zero freebore.

I normally go with Lilja barrels with a 1-13" twist rate when shooting the lighter weight bullets, even though I have used my share of 1-14" twist rate barrels as well.

Your 1-12" twist rate barrels will also do very well with various 80-85 gr. bullet weights.

A couple years back I bought some kit for a BRX. Reamer, dies etc. from a guy getting out of the calibre. No idea why. There was some loaded ammo with 70g Noslers that shot bugholes with N133. I confess to shooting it and reloading the cases with 105's and Varget., 31.6g. May visit the 70g territory again soon, as I have another rifle put together with a take off barrel from a Ruger No1, that was in 6mm Rem.

I have a 6BR zero freebore reamer now and as soon as the barrels arrive I have to send my reamer to the maker. I'm gathering up supplies and have 55gr Nosler BT's as well as Sierra 70gr Match kings, on order are Sierra 60gr Varminter and Berger 68gr flat base target. Have H335, H322, Accurate 2230 powders so far. Primers I have plenty of Rem 7 1/2 but less every day I shoot of the others like 205m and CCI 450.

Sounds like you'll soon be ready to rock and roll!

I have a 6 BR built on a Rem 700 SA, zero freebore no turn neck with a 1/10 twist. So far the Berger 64g column bullets with AR-Comp and cci-450 primer in Laupa brass are shooting great.

I shot my smallest group ever today with a 13.75 twist, 68 barts and 8208xbr with a 450 primer.
It was a 3 shot group and I’m wondering if 2 of the bullets didn’t make it...

Several good suggestions already. My two "go to" powders for light bullets in a 6br have been n135 and h322. I know others that really like lt32 as well. Ultimately, ya just have to try different things but those 3 powders are all pretty safe bets for accuracy.

I just shot three zero groups testing three different bullets in my Lederer barreled PPC with LT 30, LT 32.... good stuff ... jim

I can't say how fast you can get lighter bullets - check the loading sources - but I am using a 6mmBR 14" twist for a crow/chuck rifle, and it's great - try the 65 V-max, and the 70gr BlitzKing... they are both very fragile and accurate.

My 6BR is a 24"Hart on a Sako. Zero freebore, and if memory serves it's a 14 twist. In '05 I worked up loads with 55 Blitzking and Ballistic Tips - AA2230 was the best powder tried (I have a lot of it) with 7-1/2's and BR4's. Several loads shot .1's and .2's. I chose the fast node - 35.5/2230/7-1/2 doing 3919 in the low .1's....really cooking along. No pressure signs, no hard extraction. Shooting pd's was just a pleasure. Rockchucks too. After the brass sitting for about a yr. or so, none of those fired cases would chamber. The web dia. hadn't changed and primer pockets were just as tight, it was the shoulder dia. had grown while sitting. Never had that happen before. The load was very acccurate but way too hot. I went to a slower node that still shoots very tight groups with 55's/58's and the brass is happier..

I shoot Bart’s Avengers with N135 and Federals seated gently into the lands, or about +3K.

I have a 20.5” RVC barrel and it produces 3345 with no pressure. It is not a target rifle but a hunting rifle, although it will regularly shoot 3 shots in the low .1 and 5 in the high .1 low .2

It’s a .035 NO TURN reamer from PTG, smithed by Beanland.

I tell you all this because I really cannot imagine what a more target specific rifle would be capable of since mine has been nothing short of perfect.

When the rifle was built, I mentioned Benchmark, 335, 322 and 135 to Jon and he said the only answer was to try them all.
