Favorite Loads: M1A

Does anyone out ther have a favorite load for the M1a NM. I have 1000 cases of LC match brass that I would like to work up a load for. This would be just for local military matches for my sons. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

42.5 grains of IMR 4895, a Sierra 168 grain Matchking and CCI's #34 primer works for me. Do yourself a favor and invest in RCBS's precision micrometer to keep up with the headspace changes if you plan to reload which I advise as the headspace does change as the round count rises.

kind of curious why the 168 and not the 175?

If your rifle likes the 175 grainer shoot them but recoil is greater. The 168 grain is usually the lightest bullet that works well across the course of 200-600 yards. Most use the 175 grainer for the 600 yard only, it puts a little more strain on the M1-A.

And the 175 is the ticket beyond 600 too! The 168 is a POS beyond midrange (it was designed for 300m shooting).

Hoo-rah!

I have called Springfield many times to cocnfirm that my rifle is safe with several different types of ammo. The representative that I talked to told me that the rifles that they make are designed to handle ammo up to 180 grains in weight. I only called to confirm this so that I could use hornady factory ammo with their 178 grain bullets wich my rifle shoots amazing with. Also the reps told me that firing the rifle with the gas port turned off may or may not produce better accuracy but that doing so is not recomended and can casue premature damage to the rifle. I dont reload for mine but I call and confirm with its maker every round I think about shooting out of it.
