Favorite kinetic/impact bullet puller?

If the ammo has been loaded awhile, run the ammo through the seater die a seat the bullet a little deeper breaking the seal. It sometimes making bullet pulling easier.

Hal

When there's nothing but ogive to grab, making it smaller than the minimum collet diameter is a step backwards. Well aware of the tricks such as that or a dab of lapping compound to increase friction.

There are situations where a collet puller just doesn't get the job done, or destroys the bullet. Lightly seated bullets with lots of bearing surface above the case mouth are not a problem for any collet or pinch puller. I have a collet puller, it ain't gonna work, ain't used a kinetic since the 80's.

Thanks for those who responded to the question.

Do not use a standard shellholder in a kinetic bullet puller. The reported cases of primer ignition that I have read about over the years were always with shellholders rather than the collet provided.

This is interesting, can you provide any details? The kinetic collet system seems to be problematic for quite a few people. I may be mis-remembering but recall the RCBS unit from way back when (80's) used a shellholder.

RCBS for years without a problem Stuffed a tissue in it which stopped any damage to the the nose of the bullet. Bought an RCBS press mounted collet puller and haven't used the impact in over a year. Bought the collet type because I had a large number of bullets to pull from a purchase. Collet puller is easier and quicker.
A disposable foam ear plug works well to protect bullet tips also.

It's been a while. From memory, the collet thing hold the rim of the case and there is absolutely nothing above the primer, ever. On the other hand, when you use a shellholder, you have to slip the case in the shellholder and there is now metal above the rim of the case. Some shellholders have more meat in the middle than others and my understanding is that if a primer is seated a bit high and the case can move around in the shellholder while you're wacking the hammer on the floor, a part of the shellholder may touch that high primer and stuff happens.

As I said, I have never seen that happen. I do not personally know of anyone to whom this has happened. I have read some posts on various forums over the last 15-20 years about people reporting a detonation while using a kinetic puller and regular shellholders. I do not recall reading any such incidents when the collet was used.

I use a press mounted one when I've had to pull more than a few bullets and I have had a kinetic puller for 30 years. I use it extremely rarely now and it's usually to adjust seating when playing with a new bullet. I'm not even sure where my press-mounted one is, but it's around somewhere. I hope.

Quinetics Corp. is the original kinetic bullet puller and they are very much in business. Their's uses a collet that is open at one joint to make pushing the loaded cartridge into the puller easier. They have magnum and standard collets with their unit. Have had mine for decades and just won't quit.
