Fast barrel ?

I have had a model 10 in 22-250 for several years now. It took forever to finally hit on a powder/bullet combo that I was satisfied with and it hammers. I’m running 34.5gr of IMR 4064 with a 53 vmax using federal gmm large rifle primer. 5 shot avg 3685fps with its 22” barrel checked with a magnetospeed. Most all fired primers are on the flat side. I’m not worried about the load but I do wonder what causes the high fps with such a short barrel without being near book max. I have all the signs of a warm load just can’t believe it’s screaming that fast in such a short barrel.

Edit . I have also checked the powder charge with 3 different scales. Never had a pierced primer or hard bolt lift

if it is way out of spec for velocity, not just a little, then something is causing it...most likely pressure

I don't have any experience with the 22-250 so I cant comment on the load and what should be expected from a 22 inch barrel.

I can so though that there are fast barrels! I have run through over a dozen 284 barrels so I am very familiar withy that cartridge. I just chambered a barrel for my wife and could not believe how fast this barrel is! Once I got the barrel broke in and the load tuned, hers with 50.9 grains H4350 is shooting 20 fps faster than mine with 52.3 grains. That equates to over 100 fps difference in speed between the two barrels. You could possibly be having a similar situation with a tight-bore barrel.

Bore diameter, rifling configuration, burn rate of the specific powder lot you are loading, bullet diameter, bullet bearing surface, chronograph differences, case capacities, plus other variables that can all contribute to velocity and pressure. If several of these start stacking tolerances you can easily see large difference from the accepted norm.

I don't have a Hornady loading manual but depending on which manual you look at, that load is at max or near max. In my opinion, the best guidance on loads is the bullet manufacturer's manual because they have tested the specific bullet you are using. While other factors can contribute to high pressure, in the many years of reloading I found that changing the bullet is one of the most significant.

Hard bolt lift and ejector marks on the case head are more definite signs of high pressure than flattened primers.

I shot the 22 250 for many years until the barrel went south. IMR 4064 is an excellent choice for this caliber. In fact, Sierra (50th edition) listed it as their "accuracy load". I used it for years with considerable success.

With a 22" barrel, the faster powders tend to usually shoot faster as compared to slower powders that need a longer barrel to reach full potential. However, if you are in this game long enough, you will learn that very few things are absolute.

The interaction between different barrels / powders / bullets, etc. can sometimes seem puzzling and at times unpredicatable. This is why most loading manuals will advise working up a load slowly.

Also, while this remark is surely controversial, I have observed a gain in 50 to 100 f/s in barrels that have been fired and not stripped of all the copper down to bare metal. Some have termed this "copper equilibrium". I am not stating support for this theory, only what I have observed using modest cleaning methods.

And it appears right on the max with noslers data and speed with 2” less barrel.

Might want to ease back the throttle just a wee bit and see if that helps.

I did try in the past, the barrel looks like it’s not far from toast although it still shoots good. I’ll finish its life like it’s been going.

Some barrels are just fast. I have a factory 6mm creedmoor ruger preditor. Im loading 108 eldm with h4350. My load is 2,955fps. Im not on max charge eather. My brother in law has a custom built 6mm creedmoor 26 in barrel using the 108 at 3,000 fps.

doesn’t sound that impressive to me, looks on par with noslers load data.

i’m running 53 vmax out of my factory 223 remington 700 at 3,550 fps using 26.0 grains of n133 (26” bbl) with no pressure signs whatsoever.

per noslers data, looks like you need to pick up some cfe and get that little bugger going 4,000 fps

What do you by ALL the signs of a warm load. You don't mention brass mfg. Do you have excessive primer cratering, hard bolt lift? Primers can be deceptive as to pressure. Some flatten before others. I personally don't use the 205s and 210's most of time. If you have no other issues you might change to CCI or go with Magnum or military primers.

The attached is from Hornady 8th, IIRC. Hornady determines pressure to SAAMI but the velocity/charge is from an actual rifle. 24"Barrel. The 53 V-Max is a unique bullet in that its bearing service is less than typical due to its Ogive profile..

i have used lapua brass and poi and winchester, Yea I know it’s a warm load I’m at max by noslers data and 1 grain under hornady. I use federal gold metal large rifle primers
