F/TR Stick selection?

Hello all, I've recently gotten started in shooting 600 yard FTR matches. I've got (2 ) under my belt so far . I'm using a Manners T4A, which I like very much. The problem is the hook on the buttstock, it doesn't ride my bag very well. I'm using a Sinclair gen3 bipod and the tall, heavy, Protektor model rear bag with the Cordura ears. I'm wanting to change stocks and optics. Which stock would ride a bag better? Here's my set up

Trued Rem 700
Shilen 1:10 twist @ 24"
Manners T4A with mini chassis
Sinclair bipod
Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50

Whatever you get, I think that you need to remember that you will need some angle on the toe to be able to adjust your point of aim vertically.

If you do a search this subject was discussed (IIRC) a few months ago. Some people prefer a straight bottom on their stock while others like varying degrees of taper. I run a Master Class Prone stock with the standard taper, I don't have issues with vertical. YMMV :)

I was referring to aiming not vertical within a group. He will need a way to adjusts his point of aim vertically, since many bipods do not have this feature. If he was shooting off of a rest that would not be a factor. How do you adjust your aim?

The Sinclair Gen 3 model I use has the major vertical adjustments and a knob for fine tuning the aim point. The stock I have now, I always have to glance down between shots to make sure the stock is not going to recoil into the "hook".
I shoot free recoil with this set up.

Boyd some of the guys that have used a stock with taper claim that the stock induces vertical. I've shot on some firing points where the angle of the ground negated the angle of my stock, the gun tracked level in recoil.

You adjust for elevation by squeezing the rear bag

Yes, I have done it, but for the coarse adjustment, being able to slide the rifle or rear bag a bit, when shooting off of a bipod with on fine elevation adjustment can be an advantage.
With the additional information that was provided , I can see that this is not needed for his situation.

Captcoop. You may not need to buy a new stock unless you are just looking for a reason to ;). You could cut a piece of wood the width of your stock, the thickness of the butt hook and the length that you want to create a bag rider on the bottom of your stock. You would need to do some fitting and sanding and then you can either screw it, or glue it, or both to fill the space in front of your butt hook. I did something similar to my stock but just to take some of the taper out of the bottom of it. Here is what I did:

That looks like a well thought out idea with the wedge to fill in the hook. I'm trying to buy a Nightforce Br , I've already sold my Vortex . I thought that with the money from the scope sale and the stock sale, I'd have enough for a new / used Nightforce and a stock.thanks for the help guys.

I'm looking for a stock with a semi flat bottom on the toe, I understand that a 3 degree rake will recoil down and away from the shooters face. I would like to buy a benchrest similar stock, primarily used in F/tr and switch to F open and shoot from a rest. Laminated wood, or fiberglass really doesn't matter to me. What would y'all recommend.?

I use this stock (with an Anschutz rail) for both F-Open and F-TR: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2010/07/new-ballard-designed-f-tr-stock-from-precision-rifle-tool/

You can put a 3" wide tracking plate from Whidden on the Anschutz rail to convert it to pedestal use. Quite a few of the top F-class shooters are using PRT stocks.

I run a Masterclass prone stock in F/TR now, but previously I used a McMillan A5 with a hook much like you have on your Manners.

The .308 is all about recoil management. With the A5, I used a large tactical rear squeeze bag with very good success. With the Masterclass, an Edgewood or Doctor bag. I don't allow either setup to recoil rearward although there is slight movement. I use a firm shoulder hold to control recoil. If your reticle center is leaving the target black when you are breaking the shot, you may want to work on your position.
