I just enjoy working on loads and shooting. I’ve got a 200 yard berm and in the right time of year can shoot about 350. F/tr looked to be a fun thing. Service rifle is fun and challenging but man it’s hot in the summer. I’ll probably stick with 223 because of the components and I have a small amount of basic knowledge of the round from shooting the service rifle. I’ve learned a bunch in the past couple years (still not very competitive though). One thing I have noticed is the places I have shot and advice I have solicited from here and others has been free flowing. I sure appreciate every bit of help and knowledge. Good group of folks.

Your setup will work. I've lately been shooting Hornady 75 gr ELDMs out of a practice .223 Rem F-TR rifle with a 26" barrel. They shoot very well indeed:






I have two other .223 Rem F-TR rifles set up specifically to shoot Berger 90 VLDs and Sierra 95 gr Matchkings. For reasons of increased wind deflection, I would not choose to use the rifle fired in the images above with the 75 ELDM load over one of them for a really "important" match. Nonetheless, I think I could do pretty well with it in our monthly club matches. I think if you take what you have and participate in a match or two, you will be hooked. I also think you will enjoy yourself immensely. Give it a try! What have you got to lose?

Oh, and someone Google the Berger 200.20x and see if they are in stock anywhere... I didn't find any on the first few pages of a search. The price is about $65 a 100. Hornady 88 ELDM are about $25. That's pushing 1/3 price. Which is a thing.

Have you looked at the AR Tactical (NRA Rule 23) Mid-Range Prone Class…..Pretty much just remove the sling and add a Bipod with a Rear Sandbag and your all set. Most clubs shoot it along with the F Class matches. CMP even does it at Long Range.

I should have said this in my first post. I’ve shot some service rifle. I
like the service rifle shooting but there is more available mid range. I have shot slung midrange but get fairly fatigued by the end of a string. I just enjoy shooting. 223 is what I have shot the most of. I’m starting all of this sort of late in life I suppose.

Nothing wrong with a .223 for F TR Midrange.
