It's no wonder that these kids struggle getting into the game. With people that constantly tell them if they don't go spend six or $7,000 on a build they might as well go home. Oh and you'll need bullets that are a buck a shot.

I'm talking about F TR. If you're going to build a rifle for TR, it's good to know what people are using for TR. What you're suggesting is not what people are using.

Brother there are lots of people shooting FTR all across the country. Trust me there are people not shooting what you said. Because I talked to them every week and sell them parts to shoot in their clubs. I have probably personally equipped 50 guys to start shooting mid-range and FTR in their clubs and none of them was going to shoot a 308. They seem to be quite happy.

It will work fine to get started. See how you like the game and then you can decide which direction you want to go. Since you already have the Tikka, you have nothing to lose.

My bad. You are correct. I looked at the wrong line. The 308 beats it by .3 inches at 600.

Of course, you can step on a 223 and probably get 3k if you tried. 2750 is coasting.

When are you going to shoot at Memphis again? I'll bring down a 26" AR match rifle you can try for fun too. I have shot 88ELD's to 1000 with that gas gun.

I’m planning on going in September to the midrange. It’s so dang hot I haven’t picked the service rifle up in a while. That tikka man it shoots good. Thought I might try it up there at Memphis. Good group of guys. One of my buddies might go.

You would have to shoot a pretty big 308 bullet to beat a 90 SMK or 88 ELDM at 2750 out of a 223.

I suggest you buy a SOLUS, Origin, Mack Bros or Kauger action and give me a call and we will put you a 7 twist 223 together.

As I said before, a .223 is fine. I shoot a .223 (with Berger or Sierra 90s). That's not the issue. The issue is that when you're getting into F Class, you should know what the state of the art is before you start buying stuff and what you're giving up if you chose to go a different route. If you are going to the trouble to make a dedicated f class gun, it's wise to strongly consider just getting what is known to work and is shot by a lot of other shooters.

If you choose a .223, you have to know you will have to work harder in the wind, and that vertical at 1000 will become an issue. If you want the easy button that will take you all the way to nationals, it's a .308 shooting 200.20x's.

None of that is much concern to someone starting out, but that's where you will end up if you get into it.

No, it's not. A .223 shooting 90s inside a 200.20x out of a 30 inch barrel will be screaming hot and will trash the brass in one shot. It's not advisable.

2750 with the 88/90s is what I shoot out of my 26 inch barrel. This is a mild load. And it shoots boringly easily, stays in tune, and barely moves my 18 lbs FTR Elisio chassis.

That's not a mild load at all. 24.5 of Varget gets me 2750 out of a 30" barrel. Either way, you are not shooting inside of a 200.20x with that load.

In my 26 inch 7 twist Wilson barrel and my .230 freebore 223 with 22.5 of AR COMP is 2750. It will go up to 2850, but at 2750 the brass is not getting squished. Lapua Brass.

I think you'll find if you push them much harder than that, it will smoke your brass very quickly. But you're going to need to push those Sierras to about 3200 to match a 200.20x out of a 308. It's just not viable.

Of course, you can practice for half the price (which would be very important for a beginner) and still compete.

Oh, and someone Google the Berger 200.20x and see if they are in stock anywhere... I didn't find any on the first few pages of a search. The price is about $65 a 100. Hornady 88 ELDM are about $25. That's pushing 1/3 price. Which is a thing.

Hey I started F/TR shooting a mini 14 target model with 69grain sierras. Showed up to a Sac Valley 600 yard registered match for first match got a few chuckles ,had so much fun ended up having 4 dedicated f/tr single shot rifles and shot for a few years. Shoot what you have and worry about everything later

Shot a deer rifle challenge a couple of years ago with a Tikka T3 Varmint, 223- 8 twist. 300 and 500 yards. Ran my old service rifle 600 yd load- 80SMK on top of 24.5 Varget. Finished second, just missed the 3" plate at 500. Mine is bone stock with the 20" barrel and harris bipod. I think it is a capable platform for mid range.

Just go have fun and meet some folks and ask if they mind you sending a few down range out of some dedicated F-tr rigs..also you can use a a repeater with a bobsled and do just fine.. I heard about a fella winning the TSRA midrange championship last year with a Defiance repeater chambered in 223.
