New guy wanting to shoot FT/R. Im retired now and really enjoy getting more time to shoot. I built a couple of budget rifles (6.5 CM & 6BR) on Savage actions using Shilen Barrels and Im pleased with the results and they are fun to shoot. Wanting to put together another one in .308 so I can learn how to shoot FT/R. Wondering if anyone can provide some input on their 4 groove ratchet barrels or their standard 6 groove barrels for the heavy 308 bullets

Thanks

Roger

Their 4 groove ratchet barrels are great. I took 2nd at the 2021 NRA Long Range Nationals using one, and won several other regional and state matches with it. It was a 1:10 twist heavy varmint using Berger 200.20x's.

Why not start your build with a premium action? I started building on a Savage action just like you did. I quickly discovered that there were very few options for aftermarket triggers. I decided to try a 700 clone and I picked Bighorn Origin because they accept Savage prefit barrels. I have built two of these for F-open competition with Shilen 6 groove barrels and I am pleased with the results.

Im having good luck with a 10tw ratchet barrel this year based on a prior experience with a 13tw barrel I had and feedback from Matt and his experience with the heavies in them.

Thank you for the replies. I think I will pull the trigger on a 28 inch Heavy Bull with 10tw 4 groove ratchet.
