F-T/R to F-Open Thoughts

I’m thinking [maybe dreaming] of putting together an F-open midrange rifle chambered in 6mm Dasher and, I’d like to do it on the cheap. I know what you’re thinking… but, by this, I mean using parts I already own.

First, a question: What makes a good action -good- for this role? I think the answer is one that can support the weight/stress of a 1.25” no taper barrel that is 28”-30” in length and can be bedded in a way to optimize stability. The stock will have to do its part as well.

I have two rifles I use for F-T/R and I’d like to consider pressing one into F-Open service. One is a BAT VR repeater bedded in a GRS X-Eater stock chambered in .223 and, I do have the .308 bolt for it.

The other is a Panda F-Class bedded in a second GRS X-Eater chambered in .308. The barrel channels in both stocks are already set up for a 1.25” barrel. The Panda has that giant flat bottom and seems like the logical choice though it is constructed mostly of aluminum. The VR seems very stout though, in repeater form, the bedding (my bedding) is not as good as that of the Panda.

I’d rather use the VR action but don’t have a good reason for this choice other than the VR has a better trigger and it represents an opportunity to grind out some bedding and do a better job.

Seeking advice or guidance. Is this a bad idea? Are neither of these actions really a good choice? Should I be thinking about a new and dedicated build?

Thank you,

Henryrifle

Well from a old Sling Palma Shooter that won a Ton.
Age gets in the Game sometime !
I went to the Dark Side F/Class. I have three Rifles all on 700 SA Rem. Blue Printed.
One F/TR .308 McMillian XTR , My Fun Gun ,Not the the most rifle or style shooting I prefer .
Two F/Open Rifles .284 and Dasher stocks from Urban Rifleman , SEB Mini with Blake up dates .
This is my shooting High. .284 is the best round I have ever shot in a Match Rifle.
at 74 I won a Reginal NRA Match this past Fall. F/Class has more challenge , I feel than Sling in my opinion ?
The X Ring on a F/Class at 1000 yards can be hard to find .

Go Open and don't look back.

Either of you rifles will work fine. We hang 32" straight barrels off Rem 700's without any any issues and without bedding any of the barrel. Dashers don't have much recoil, you can go with a straight barrel or even a heavy varmint and be competitive. I've gone to 7" and 7.5" twist on all my BRX's and Dashers to give me the option to shoot any bullet.

I've been a Panda man since 1989. Hard to go wrong with one. Used the same one for MS then LR BR, then for F-Class Open since 1998. Won quite a few matches with Panda's for the last 20+ years. Go for it. You'll love F-Open!
